Welcome Back Miche!!!

Buttons and Birdcages

You remember the beautiful and talented, Miche from the first season of Refashion Runway. I’d like to welcome her as my newest partner. If you love to be inspired for fashion and refashion her blog is the place to go! The photos and projects quite often take my breath away. Not only is Miche adorable, but she is a talented seamstress as well.

She won the Summer Dress Challenge with this adorable refashion:

SummerDressAfter

UmbrellaHeartFlowers

I was fortunate to get an interview with her, so you could get to know her a little better.

You have an incredible blog with beautiful photographs of your amazing style. What inspired you to start your own blog?

I had been following various blogs for a while and always thought to myself ‘Man, I wish I could do that’. One day I woke up and just decided, ‘you know what? I’m done wishing I could do it, I can do it’. I stopped making excuses that day and decided to go for it.

You obviously love vintage, do you have a favorite vintage piece and does it have a story behind it?

I do! I really, really LOVE vintage. My absolute favorite vintage piece is actually one of the first I acquired – it’s a leopard print scarf that my grandmother gave me. My grandmother love leopard print (she’s hip like that) and since she passed the beautiful scarf on to me a couple of years ago I have literally worn it probably 200 times. Surprisingly, I haven’t worn it much on the blog (that will definitely have to change soon), but you can see it tied in my hair here.

I noticed you are a graduate student. What are you studying and where do you hope it takes you?

Actually, I need to update my profile because as of May, I am no longer a graduate student (yay!). I graduated from a dual Master’s program and received a Masters of Public Health (M.P.H.), and a Masters of Social Work (M.S.W.). I have always been interested in health and working with people (but I can’t stand blood), so they seemed to be a good fit for me. Currently I am working as a mental health therapist at a local non-profit organization in my town. I don’t have an exact destination for my career at this point, just hoping to help some people along the way 

You also mention that you are a travel enthusiast. Can you tell us about some of your favorite travel adventures?

I have been very fortunate in that I have known a lot of amazing people who work/live/travel internationally, and I have been able to kind of follow them around. One of the most incredible trips I’ve ever taken was actually my first major trip out of the country without family. I went to Peru with one of my good friends and we hiked the Inca trail and went to Machu Picchu – it was INCREDIBLE, the views, the people, the entire experience was completely life changing.

The photographs on you blog are so fun and beautiful. Who takes your pictures and where do you get your ideas for your shoots?

My boyfriend, Paul, actually takes pretty much all the photos for the blog. He is an amazing photographer and it’s actually become a really fun project for the two of us to work on together. We try to not shoot in the same place twice (keeps things interesting for us, and the readers). We typically try to plan out locations in advance, but sometimes we end up just driving around and looking for places that look fun.

Tell us about your favorite photos?

I have to pick? One of my absolute favorites is actually a photo of Paul and I together that we took using the timer for the Great Gatsby themed shoot we did a few months back (Actually all those photos came out beautifully).

TheGreatGatsbyMiche

Another favorite is from the first Refashion Runway Challenge: Stripes, this photo was so totally candid – Paul wanted me to stand basically in the middle of this giant water fountain, and it started spraying right as he started taking the photos.

Do you have any advice for new fashion bloggers?

Don’t be intimidated – one of the biggest things I still struggle with related to my blog. Remember, it’s your little place on the internet to write about things you love. One day, you’ll be able to look back on your posts and you won’t care about what other people may have thought when looking at them, all that will matter is that it was a true representation of you at that moment.

After looking at all of your refashions, it’s easy to see that you’re an excellent seamstress. When did you learn to sew? Do you remember your first project?

I first learned to sew in middle school home economics class, we sewed a locker organizer, and I chose this deep blue fabric with stars and moons printed on it (crazy the things we remember, isn’t it?). Even though I loved it at the time, I only recently picked it back up and am definitely learning as I go (blogging has been incredible helpful in allowing me to perfect my craft).

Judging from your photos on your site, it looks like you live in a beautiful area. What is it like where you live and what do you do for fun?

I live in a city, but honestly, there is so much green space that it feels more suburban. In only 15 minutes you can go from downtown to the country – it’s a great place to be. I love biking around the various neighborhoods and hanging out in our ‘arts district’. I’m originally from a pretty rural town, so being close to things has been an awesome change of pace for me.

What has been your favorite thing about blogging so far?

The sense of community that has come along with it, and the amazing people I’ve met along the way. Blogging has connected me to like-minded people with similar interests, and
it has allowed me to further define not only my sense of style, but also who I am creatively.

How would your best friend describe you?

Oh man, I feel like I should call her and ask this question because I’m actually not quite sure. She would probably say something like ‘She is one of those people you can just relax and have fun with, no need to impress or anything like that’ (at least this is what I hope she would say). I generally try to have fun, and not put a lot of pressure on people to act, or be a certain way.

I highly recommend that you head over to Miche’s blog, Buttons and Birdcages, and subscribe right away. You will be throughly entertained, I promise!!!

Refashion Runway: Season Two Begins Today!

It’s finally here!

Season Two of Refashion Runway.

Refashion Runway Season Two3

Once again, it was so difficult to choose from all of the talented seamstresses who tried out. Thank you to everyone who auditioned and I hope if you aren’t a part of this season, you’ll sew along with us and possibly join us for Season Three.

I’d like to inroduce the next group of talented and creative women who are getting ready to wow you with their amazing refashions for season two.

Meet Susan, a fellow Oregonian, from Second Chances. I’ve been a fan of hers for a long time and I was thrilled when she agreed to be a part of Refashion Runway. She has been lucky enough to have her beautiful refashions published in Altered Couture Magazine which is something I’d love to do someday!

Susan

***

Next, meet Trisha, a fellow teacher who lives in beautiful Hawaii. What an inspirational place to live. How lucky is she!!! Trisha has definitely caught the “refashioning bug” and blogs about her amazing refashion adventures on her blog Feeling Kinda Thrifty.

Trisha

***

Meet the adorable Carissa from Carissa Knits, who recently changed her lifestyle and eating habits and lost a whopping 75 pounds!!! Wow, such an accomplishment. Instead of buying a whole new wardrobe every 15-20 pounds, she resolved to remake things she had or refashion thrift store finds. Some garments were redone multiple times over the course of her weight loss journey – from simply being taken in to complete structural overhauls.

Carissa

***

Meet the enthusiastic Lauren from Adventures of Lauren. Who knew that a beautiful scientist/belly dancer like Lauren would also be able to create amazing refashions like this:

 Lauren2

***

I’m excited to welcome Magda all the way from Portugal who blogs about her sewing on  House of Estrela. Her beautiful work has been featured all over the blogosphere and I can’t wait to see what she has in store for us!

Magda

***

Meet Joelle, the Eco Wardrobe Warrior, a generous and creative seamstress, who shares her love of sewing and refashioning by teaching workshops and classes.  Not only does she sew, but she creates beautiful jewelry as well.

joelleharris_1366520936_51

***

Meet Deanna from Wedding Dress Blue. Deanna sews the most beautiful quilts and had fun sewing along with us during the first season of Refashion Runway. You might recognize her fun Barbie “copycat” refashion from last season.

Deanna

***

Now meet Desarae from Gladness of Heart. She just learned how to sew this past February! And I’m amazed at what she can already do. She has fallen head over heels for sewing and refashioning. I love the way she thinks. “Each project is a challenge…the opportunity to try something I haven’t before, learn new techniques, and gain knowledge about works and what doesn’t, both technically and fashionably for myself.”  Although she didn’t send her “sew alongs” to me to post last season, she sewed along with every challenge and posted the projects on her blog.

Desarae

***

I just know this beautiful and talented group of women will create some inspirational refashions. I can’t wait to see what they have in store for us!

So we can all get started on our “sew alongs” here is the list of the weekly challenges:

Week One: Plaid
Week Two: Pantone 2013 Color Emerald Green
Week Three: Peplum
Week Four: Leather
Week Five: Halloween
Week Six: Winter White

As you can see, I’ve left the challenges fairly open ended. Just remember, each garment must be original (in other words not posted on your blog already) and have a before and after picture. Also, please remember, this is a “refashion” competition so your garment must be constructed from a previous item of some kind. I’ll be sending a schedule via email to all the contestants.

Week One creations will be posted next Saturday and you can begin voting for your favorites.

If you are “sewing along” with us, send your before and after pictures to bhunting@eoni.com. We want to see your creations, too!

One last item, if you are competing or sewing along, and you have a blog, so we can get the word out, please place a link to The Renegade Seamstress in your sidebar with this image:

Good luck and your challenge starts…….

RIGHT NOW!!!!!

Life is Trying Things to See if They Work: Shirt Redesign Tutorial

OK, now back to our regularly scheduled programming…

polkadot shirt redesign tutorial

“Life is trying things to see if they work.”

-Ray Bradbury

This shirt and post are the perfect examples of Ray Bradbury’s quote. When I started out redesigning this shirt,

polka dot shirt redesign tutorial

I wasn’t really sure where I was going with it. I knew it needed to be smaller. But other than that, it was just trying things to see if they worked.

I love how the sleeves turned out, but that only happened after several different attempts at sleeve treatments.

Not to mention, I tried an animated GIF to see if it would work.

It did.

SAH-WHEAT!!!!

If you’re interested in learning how to make an animated GIF, go to gickr.com. My funny blogging friend Rarasaur turned me on to it. It’s SUPER fun and easy to do.

Now on to redesigning this polka dot shirt.

The News I’ve Been Busting at the Seams to Tell You!!

book announcement

I finally pushed that send button.

I told myself I’d do it last summer, but I didn’t. I was going to do it over Christmas vacation, but I didn’t. OK, do it on spring break, I said, but I didn’t. Finally, in April, on my birthday, I pushed the button.

Jan, Katie and Karin sent good thoughts out into the universe for me.

My book proposal hurdled straight through cyberspace, latched on to those good thoughts and carried them along with it as they all neatly landed together in Roxane Cerda’s inbox.

Apparently all those good thoughts worked.

It must’ve been perfect timing.

Because a few weeks later, Stash Books said they would love to be my publisher.

WOW!! Somebody pinch me!

I’ve been so excited and busy all summer, sewing, photographing tutorials, and writing. I really wanted to tell you, but I waited until I turned in my first draft.

So far, it’s been an amazing experience. So much to learn about this whole writing process. I just closed my eyes and jumped in with both feet to this new world I’ve been so fortunate to be able to join. All the editors, photographers and art directors I’ve been in contact with have been nothing but helpful, patient, kind and encouraging. I am truly humbled and grateful to have such an incredible team of people working with me on this book.

They are flying me to California in September for a photo shoot. OUCH! I just pinched myself again.

I can’t give away too much of the book, but I’m sure you have a pretty good idea on what it’s going to be about. Wink, wink…. I’ll keep you updated and let you know when the release date gets closer because rumor has it, I’ll have a few copies to give away here. 🙂

I. Can’t. Wait.

Now that my draft has been turned in, I’m looking forward to posting tutorials here for you again. So many fun events coming up… new refashions and of course, Season Two of Refashion Runway.

In the meantime, I have so many of these, I want to give some away to you…

take a smile

Feel free to take one anytime you’d like.

Make the World a Better Place, One Refashion at a Time

I love it when our hobbies go so far as to benefit other people.

Patti Gagstetter was inspired by The Renegade Seamstress’s Refashion Runway to arrange a benefit show and sale along with her local PEO (Philanthropic Education Organization) to raise money for Women’s Scholarships in Greenwood, South Carolina.

The funds from this event will be used to provide scholarships for women in
the Greenwood area – high school seniors entering college, women displaced
from their jobs and seeking to earn a new degree, and/or women who have had
their education interrupted and want to complete their degrees. The number
and size of the scholarship(s) granted depend upon the success of this and
other fundraisers.

Even though I don’t live near her, I’m still planning on helping with this great cause and I hope you will, too.

They are collecting all kinds of holiday and basic clothing pieces in August
and September. Seamstresses from a local wedding/prom store are then going
to choose 10 outfits to refashion and another 10
outfits they will just accessorize with scarves, belts, jewelry, purses,
etc.

They will have a slide presentation of the “Before” and then the model will
walk out in the Refashioned outfit.

As guests to the event walk up the “Red Carpet Runway” to the stage/seating
area, they will also have mannequins dressed up in re-fashioned clothing with
a “before” picture attached to it so that the guests get in on the fun right from
the front door.

They will earn scholarship funds through ticket sales, sales of the
refashioned clothing items and racks of donated items just waiting to be
refashioned!

Fashion Show

Here’s how you can help:

You can donate a refashioned item for her to sell for this good cause. Each item should include your name/address/phone or e-mail along with a “before” picture, the completed item, and a suggested value for the item to be sold during the sale following the fashion show. Please send your item to:

Patti Gagstetter
117 Gunnery Court West
Ninety Six, SC 29666

by October 15.

She will send you a photo following the event showing your item(s).

You can contact Patti at pgagstetter@gmail.com

Together, let’s make this world a better place, one refashion at a time.

Thanks in advance for participating!

Thrifty Chic

I know what you’re thinking.

You recognize her from somewhere………

How do you know her………

Thrifty Chic

Hey, it’s the beautiful and talented Mary Peterson from Thrifty Chic.

You probably remember her from the first season of Refashion Runway. She won the Copycat Challenge with this amazing refashion:

944fed3ee0a7d704889de7e5829b59e3-1IMG_2524 IMG_2573_2

Mary is one of my new partners. She has been working hard on her own refashion blog. I’m sure many of you have already subscribed to Thrifty Chic to be inspired by her creative redesigns but, if not, I highly recommend you head over there right now and subscribe. She has some of the most beautiful and wearable refashion tutorials out there.

I was lucky enough to interview her so you could get to know her a bit better. Here’s our conversation:

Tell us about the moment you fell in love with refashioning.

That is an easy one! It was “The Great White Shirt.” Check it out! When I made this shirt in a few hours over a couple of days, I realized that I could have something new without paying full price, or going through the time and expense of sewing from scratch. This shirt received more compliments than anything I had ever purchased in a mall. It was the shirt that launched my “blogging niche.”

4 5 (1)

What has been the most fun about blogging so far?

At this point, the best thing has been meeting and sharing ideas with the wonderful people in the refashion community. I have learned so much from them and it makes me so happy when I find out I have inspired or helped someone else as well.

How would your best friend describe you?

She would probably say I am certifiably crazy! LOL!
I love to laugh, be silly and have a great time. She would also say I am loyal and driven to be creative.

What is your favorite thing to do in your spare time?

I love my quiet time early in the morning. At that time it is just my coffee, the chirping birds, and I before the kids get up and all of the mayhem of the day begins. No TV or radio. Sometimes I read, blog, or play with new refashion ideas on my dress form. Also, I love to be active with swimming, exercise class, and hiking with my friends. Of course it goes without saying that I also adore the time to shop and dream at a thrift store for new refashion ideas!

hiking

Who is your role model and why?

My role model is my mother. She is hanging out with the Lord now and I miss her daily. I may be biased, but in my opinion she was just the sweetest, most gentle, God fearing, woman on the planet. With all of that, she was still fierce, tough as nails, and a mother who would give anything she had for her family.

IMG_0237

What is something about yourself that people would be surprised to hear?

People I just meet are always surprised that I have not been a teacher (currently 3rd grade) my entire working career. Prior to that, I was in the fashion business. I have been in order: a design assistant, (think “The Devil Wears Prada,” I kid you not!) a sweater designer, design room manager, and a children’s (boys) sportswear designer. I left the business for many reasons but I do not miss it at all. Now I like to say I help to “Fashion Futures.”

Where do you live? What is your favorite thing to do around town?

I live in Covina California. My favorite thing to do (aside from thrifting) in town is to go out with my husband and socialize with friends. There is a cozy wine bar downtown that is a favorite. We also like to find places that have craft beers and yummy appetizers.

Any advice for someone else starting a blog?

Oh yes! If you are not technically savvy, get some help. I was so fortunate to have a family friend who has/is helping me out with the technical aspects. He designed my logo and led me through the Ad Sense riddles in no time. Before he came on the scene, I spent a year trying to wade through it! (I adore you James!) Also, don’t be shy to ask fellow bloggers for help and advice. I was nervous about that but wonderful people like you Beth, have played a huge part in getting me on track.

Anything else you’d like us to know about you?

I am a chocoloholic! (Only dark chocolate) and it must be See’s, Godiva, or Dove or it is not worth the time or calories to me. (Oh I sound like a chocolate snob!) LOL! I also love to dance. Give me ‘80’s and 90’s music and you can’t stop me!

Thank you, Mary, for taking the time to help us get to know you better. I’ve got the most supportive and loyal readers and I’m sure they will head on over to support a hard working and creative blogger like you.

Mary also has some pretty cool giveaways on her site. So head on over to Thrifty Chic, check out all her fun refashion tutorials, and subscribe so you don’t miss a thing.

A Mumu Makeover

 Hawaiian Dress Title After

Seriously, who cares if I get freckles on my legs.

Sometimes you just need to go outside, relax and accept what the sun has to offer.

I know I’ve said it before, but it’s true. How lucky am I?

I love waking up to this each day. A small Eastern Oregon town where I’m graced with panoramic beauty, where deer hang out in my yard, and where summer has finally arrived. It usually takes me a few weeks to realize it. The first stretch of vacation is always filled with organization, cleaning, appointments, and getting caught up with life. And then it happens…..

that one extraordinary day when I wake up and realize the next twenty four hours are totally up to me. I can enjoy whatever comes my way. I can finally breathe and notice my life.

That day was today.

My eyes close, as my favorite stairwell rendition of Halleluia, by Skeye, cascades gently from my laptop. The wannabe musician inside me desperately wants to sing along. But all I can do is catch my breath, and let her beautiful voice go deep to lift me where freckles really don’t matter.

The horse slowly saunters over and stares at me. Maybe it’s Skeye’s hypnotic voice that lured him over or maybe it’s the bright colors of the adirondack chair that Penny made for me. Or maybe, like my friend Karin says, he was connecting with the joy I happen to be feeling at this moment. I look up from the computer and my heart swells yet again. I’m so fortunate to have a job that gives me time to heal in the sunshine each summer, to rejuvenate, and to take time just to notice my life.

Today, while “noticing my life”, I got inspired to make a summer dress to go with my newly acquired leg freckles.  I head into my thrift stash which, thanks to my early summer bursts of energy, now sits neatly stacked and folded with a color coordinated organizational system. I stop, sigh, and gaze for awhile, just to admire the orderly beauty of it all. When I finally snap out of it, my eyes land on this pure silk Hawaiian dress that I scored last fall at the Goodwill for a whopping $2.99.

Hawaiian Dress Refashion Tags

It’s made for a woman who is my complete opposite- a big busted, small hipped kind of gal. But you know, that blue and green silk was irresistible and ya gotta love those yellow parrots!

Somehow, I need to make the bottom of this dress larger and the top smaller. I’ve done this before with other dresses but this one was different. It had lining and a long zipper down the back. Hmmmm…..can’t just cut out the middle, gather the skirt and sew it back on this time. This dress presented a bit more of a challenge.

By the time it was all said and done, I actually refashioned this dress two ways.

This was the first rendition. My friend Kris said it was very Betty Draper.

Hawaiian Dress Refashion After

I liked the first dress but when Kris said it needed to be more Joan Holloway than Betty Draper, I got right to work and this was the result.

Hawaiian Dress After

What do you think?

If you like the Betty Draper dress, this is the tutorial for you:

Hawaiian Dress RefashionAfter

I started by taking out the zipper with my seam ripper. I actually left the top of the zipper installed because you will reinstall the zipper later.

Hawaiian Dress Refashion1s

I then put it on, looked in the mirror, and using safety pins, marked where I’d like the new waistline to be. I also pulled it up and marked the new length with another pin.

Hawaiian Dress Refashion2

Using a washable fabric marker and adding a half inch for a seam, mark the new waistline.

Hawaiian Dress Refashion3

Using your rotary cutter, cut the new waistline.

Hawaiian Dress Refashion4

Then cut the skirt (off the top) to desired length, leaving the hem intact.

Hawaiian Dress Refashion5

Using the longest stitch on your machine, baste around the top of the skirt.

Hawaiian Dress Refashion6

Hawaiian Dress Refashion7

Right sides together match and pin the side seams and middle of the front and back. Pull gently on the basting stitches to ease in the rest of the skirt to fit the bodice. Pin and sew.

Hawaiian Dress Refashion8

Leave the back seam open so you can reinstall the zipper.

Hawaiian Dress Refashion9

Open up the back skirt seam to fit the zipper. Using the zipper foot, reinstall the zipper.

Hawaiian Dress Refashion10

Hawaiian Dress Refashion17

Now for the neckline. Cut a slit down the middle of the neckline to the depth you like. Fold over and press. Then cut on the pressed lines.

But, if you’re more of a Joan Holloway type of girl, then here’s the tutorial for you:

Hawaiian Dress Title After

Do every step the same as the Betty Draper version above, but instead of basting around the top of the skirt, cut out your custom pencil skirt using your custom skirt pattern from here and attach to the bodice and reinsert the zipper. The neckline was also cut deeper so I could drop the neckline over the shoulders a bit.

Hope this will be helpful to you during your summer refashion adventures!!!
