Time-Traveling DIY: Recreating the 1962 Foldout Barbie Dream House from a Cardboard Box!

“What’s this, Beth? Another dollhouse in the works?”

Yep! I had an absolute blast creating this foldout cardboard Barbie house—like, WAYYYYYYY too much fun. It’s starting to dawn on me; I might be regressing back into my childhood years. But hey, does that surprise anyone?

Raise your hand if you remember the foldout cardboard dollhouse made especially for Barbie in 1962, complete with mid-century modern cardboard furniture?

What an ingenious concept! Not only is it cool, but it also serves as a practical storage solution for dollhouse furniture. Let’s take inspiration from their brilliant idea of a cardboard foldout dollhouse and give it a modern twist using a recycled cardboard box, foam board, fabric, and wallpaper samples.

As you can see, my pink-o-meter was spiking! But in my humble opinion, in an oh-so-delightful and unapologetic way.

What do you say, Judy, Karin and Kris? You guys up for an afternoon of playing Barbies? I promise I won’t tell anyone. 😉

Hmmmmmmmm, who knows, maybe I’ll start making refashioned Barbie clothes next. Wouldn’t that be fun!

Happy Crafting!

You’ve outdone yourself…again :) I particularly like the pedestal kitchen table and the houseplants. Can’t wait to see your next creation!

    • Awwwwwww! Thank you Mother Deer! I really had fun with this one and I could’ve kept going and going. It was super fun to shop the thrift stores looking for little items to repurpose into dollhouse furniture and accessories. I think I’m going to create a tutorial on how to make the patio umbrella soon. So fun to hear from you again!!!!

I love this. I had the one that had a brick patio, kitchen, living room and bedroom. It was my favorite toy. It was ruined when our basement flooded. I think it was a lot more fun than the plastic ones they have now.

  3. Teresa Smith-Dixon says:

Ha, I had that house exactly. It was cool to not be plastic back then. Wish i had a grand child…I would try to make one. Teresa

I can imagine how much fun you had making this! It is truly delightful. We’re still in the baby doll stage, but interest in Barbie is beginning. This project is going in my “things to do later” file! Sweet!

Thanks, Beth! Will there be another refashion runway this year? It’s my favorite to share with friends.
