A Monday Morning Epiphany

Five bags of clothes in the car ready to go to the thrift store.

WHAT, you ask?!!!???

Why is a refashion girl such as yourself taking clothes back for resale? Don’t you sew up all of  your unwanted things into fabulous new creations? 😉

Well……..

I do see the possibilities in most everything I bring home. Each item does seem to call out to me what it wants to be in it’s next life. But, when the refashion stash gets too big it just becomes overwhelming. In order to keep the creative juices flowing, not to mention being able to find things, I must clean out once in awhile and send some things back out into the world. Who knows what budding refashionista might be needing that perfect item at that moment. Who am I to keep it all to myself?

It feels good to be somewhat organized.  I’ve still got a long way to go, but the process has at least begun.

Here’s just a little glimpse into one of today’s “organizational strategies.” (Yes, that was for you Barb!)

This might be a no-brainer for some of you, but for me, it was close to  an epiphany, complete with lights shining and angels singing. Quite the breakthrough for a girl who had belts, scarves and bags falling on her head every time she reached up in her closet for an accessory.

Well, here’s to a clutter free life…….Someday!!!

Guest Appearance on Club Chrissie???!!!?

Kim, over at The Creative Addiction Blog, just introduced me to Club Chrissie. I gotta say, this YouTube craft show is so refreshing and fun. In Kim’s opinion, Club Chrissie is “what would happen if Martha Stewart Living and Pee Wee’s Playhouse had a baby.”

Ha! Perfect description!

I was hooked the moment the clasps on the vintage vanity open to reveal the project materials.

This just made me smile and I thought you might enjoy it, too!

I totally wish I would’ve thought of this!

Maybe someday, The Renegade Seamstress will get a guest appearance spot on Club Chrissie…..a girl can dream, can’t she?

Let Your Footwear Take Center Stage

I love shoes!

Flats. Wedges. Heels. Pumps. Sandals. Boots.

I love them all!

Let your footwear take center stage by refashioning some of your bootcut jeans into skinnies. Believe me, your shoes will thank you.

First, cut the jeans to your desired length. (If you’d like to keep the original hem, check out this tutorial on hemming jeans)

Put your jeans on inside out and pin the new seams.

Sew along your pin lines and hem. Easy as 1,2,3!

A Perfect Day After Thanksgiving Skirt Refashion Tutorial

Found this sweater when I was digging around my refashion stash and for a moment considered it’s roomy comfort might be perfect, as is, for lounging around and sleeping off the turkey induced coma on this day after Thanksgiving.

But my scissors won out and they started snipping away. Funny how they will just take over at times. Before I knew it, those Fiskars had cut the sleeves and the top of that shirt clean off.

I guess there’s no turning back now so I might as well turn it inside out and start pinning. Be sure when sewing the new side seam to start at the bottom and watch so you’re matching the stripes along the way.

As I was searching for some wide elastic, I came across some more of Cooper’s old boxer shorts. What the heck…… he finally forgave me the last time I mentioned his underwear on the internet. It was such a nice color and so soft and comfy, perfect for the waistband of this skirt. I couldn’t resist. And besides, it’s refashioning at it’s finest! Right?!!!??

After trimming the old shorts away, I marked the center front and back of the elastic and the skirt with chalk.

Matching the chalk marks and the side seams, pin and sew the elastic to the top of the skirt.

And now, feeling just as comfy on this day after Thanksgiving as when I was wearing the shirt, I can now actually get up off the couch and go somewhere.

Even if that somewhere is taking Cooper and Garrett bird hunting. Perhaps, I need to refashion some camouflage next so I can look good out there in the marsh. 🙂

Enjoy your day and don’t forget to boost your local community by shopping Small Business Saturday tomorrow.

Brooke and Her Refashioned T Shirt Dress: A Tutorial

Talk about being a versatile kind of gal.

Hunting for elk with mom and dad one minute and playing dress up the next. Our little Brookie loves to be the star of the show, so with out further adieu,

PRESENTING:

Brooke modeling her new T-shirt Dress.

Ya just gotta love her! 🙂

Brooke’s mom, Heather, showed me the beautiful Hanna Andersson website. REALLY nice children’s clothing. I fell in love with the little girl’s dresses and I wish I could buy all of them for Brooke. But, alas, on a teacher’s salary that’s just not gonna happen. BUT, lucky for me, I’ve got a stash of thrift store sweaters and t-shirts just begging to become dresses for a budding little refashionista.

Here’s the how to for this t-shirt dress:

I started with two thrift store t-shirts. I used the bottom of the brown shirt awhile ago for some other project so I was thrilled to use more of it for this dress. I loved the brown and turquoise color combination.

Lay out a well fitting t-shirt on top of the shirt you want to use for the bodice. Use this for your pattern. Cut around it adding a half inch for a seam. You’ll be using the existing neckline. YAY! One less step to do. That’s the beauty of refashioning!

Measure how long you’d like the bodice to be and cut off the bottom of the shirt. Put that aside of course, to use for a future project.

Next, cut off the sleeves of the shirt you want to use for the skirt part of the dress. Put the sleeves aside for later.

Cut off the bottom of the t-shirt to the desired length of the skirt part of the dress plus a half inch for a seam. When you add this length to the length of the bodice, it should add up to the desired length of the entire dress. Here again-the beauty of refashioning-there will be no need to hem because you’re using the existing hem!

I just wanted a slight gather on the dress, so I cut the sides a few inches wider than the bodice.

Right sides together and because knit stretches, start your side seam at the bottom to ensure an even hem.

Now, sew the sides seams of the bodice.

Mark the middle front and back.

Use the longest stitch on your machine and sew all around the top of the skirt, this will become the gathers as you pull the thread of the basting stitch.

Right sides together, and matching the sides, front middle and back middle, ease the top of the skirt to fit the bottom of the bodice by pulling on the basting stitch. Pin and sew.

You can topstitch this seam to keep it flat if you like.

Next, measure and cut the sleeves to fit. Here again-the beauty of refashioning-take advantage of the finished sleeve edge. 🙂 Saves loads of time!!

If the sleeves are too wide, just sew and trim a seam down the edge to fit your little girl.

Right sides together, pin and sew the sleeve into the armhole, matching the top and bottom. My sleeve was a little larger than the armhole, but no worries, just fold in a few places to create small pleats at the top. Adds some visual detail on the sleeve.

The little girl in your life can wear this with leggings and boots for a perfect fall or winter dress. And of course, no one really needs to know, that it only cost pennies to make, wink, wink. 😉

Checking out our neighbors little miniature horse that lives on the other side of the fence.

I gave Brooke the choice of buttons or fabric flowers to put on the front and she chose these fabric flowers:

Good choice Brooke! We thought three across the front would look great! Check out the tutorial for these cute flowers here.

Shirt Refashion Tutorial and a Few Thrift Store Shopping Tips

Quite often, my subscribers mention that they wish they had an “eye” like mine for finding thrift store clothes to refashion. I certainly don’t claim to have any special thrift store magic but throughout this tutorial I would like to give you a few tips that might be helpful the next time you venture out to your friendly neighborhood thrift store.

In order to keep their merchandise moving and fresh, most thrift stores will have a half price day. Usually a certain color tag is on sale. When I shop, I will only look at the sale items. I don’t like to spend much money on items to refashion. It makes me much more likely to take risks and start cutting if I know I didn’t spend much on a piece of clothing.

It was pink tag day at the Goodwill. The dress I’m going to refashion was normally $5.99 but I bought it for $3.00.

Another trick to thrift store shopping, especially if you love to refashion as much as I do, is to check out the L and XL section. Don’t limit yourself to your regular size. I’m an average size and quite often, my section doesn’t have much. The large clothing will give you plenty of material to work with and you can find some great fabrics and styles. Just a few modifications can result in some great changes.

This dress was a Lane Bryant size 22. I normally wear a 10 or 12.

But, I loved the great details on the front and the fabric was a nice stretch cotton.

If you train your eye to look for interesting details, quality fabrics, and great patterns, thrift store shopping can become an adventurous treasure hunt. I don’t always know immediately what I’m going to make, but many times I’m drawn to something on the garment and if the price is right, I’ll buy it and put it in my stash for later.

I decided this big dress would be perfect to refashion into a long shirt to go with my newly refashioned jeans.

So I started by cutting off the sleeves and the skirt.

Little Girl’s Cable Knit Sweater Dress

Now that everyone in my family is safe and back home, I think it’s time for another refashion. An easy one, though, since I’m still reeling a bit from last weekend’s “adventure“.

If you’ve got a little girl in your life and you make one of these dresses, you’ll never look at a sweater the same again. So many possibilities…..

Isn’t this label great!

Use a well fitting t-shirt for a pattern.

Cut around the t-shirt, leaving a half inch for a seam.

Turn the sweater inside out and sew the side seams, starting at the bottom to keep the bottom edge together. Then cut the sleeve length to fit.

Turn inside out and sew up the sides of the sleeves to fit.

Place the sleeves back into the armholes, right sides together, pin and sew.

And now you’ve got a sweet little sweater dress for a cute little girl in your life.

I’m pretty sure Brookie, has a modeling career ahead of her. That is if she can find the time after all of her hunting, fishing, four wheeling and horse riding adventures with her mom and dad. 🙂

One very long, cold night for Cooper!

It’s Saturday night. The phone rings. The caller ID says, “Coop.”  No mom wants to hear the words that come next. Especially not on a very cold November night in Eastern Oregon during elk hunting season. Nothing prepares you for those words. So many nights, I’ve worried for nothing.  All those years of conditioning myself to never let those thoughts come into my mind when my husband and son are gone for a week in the mountain wilderness. All that positive self talk  I’ve learned to do. Stay busy. Know they are OK. Everything’s fine. I’m not prepared for what I hear next.

I answer the phone, assuming they got an elk. “Hey, Coop!”

“Mom, I’m lost.”  I can hear the intense fear. “The wolves are howling.”

I have to stay calm for him, but I want to throw up. It’s dark. I want to cry. It’s supposed to get down to ten degrees. I’m shaking. But I have to stay calm for him. Reassure him that everything is going to be fine. Remind him the first thing he needs to do is build a fire. Remind myself he’s not a little boy, he’s fifteen. Remind myself he’s got a gun. Remind myself he’s prepared. Remind myself he’s an excellent marksman. Remind myself he’s been hunting for many years with his dad. But the fear I hear on the other end of the phone is real. Very real!

I hear myself calmly say, “You’re going to be fine, Coop.” Where did THAT come from? I tell myself to breathe. There’s so much I want to say to him. Not much phone battery left he tells me. I just want to keep him on the phone. He’s my youngest. He’s my surprise. He’s my Coop. Just breathe I tell myself again. I somehow get the strength to say again, “Coop, just build a fire, stay put and everything will be OK.” I know I need to hang up to save his cell phone batteries. But those darn thoughts. It’s dark. It’s cold. The wolves.  The voice that must be someone else’s manages to say again, “Coop, just build a fire, in the meantime, I’ll call your brother, we’ll make a plan and call you back.” It takes all my strength to push that button and hang up.

The rest of the night slowly drags on.  Coop builds a fire and stays remarkably calm. Buster is sure he knows where he is, but the search can’t start ’til morning. No one sleeps, not down here, not up there. I desperately want to call him, just to hear his voice, just to check on him, but that low battery. I push out the scary images that continually try to invade my mind. I won’t let myself go there. Self talk. He’s safe, he’s warm, they will find him in the morning. He’s safe, he’s warm, they will find him in the morning. He’s safe, he’s warm, they will find him in the morning. My thoughts go instead to all those parents that have to wait through something like this with no contact at all. My heart goes out to them. I’m thankful for the phone, so thankful for the phone.

It’s finally Sunday morning. The phone rings again. This time the caller ID says, “Steve.” Every mom wants to hear those precious three words that come next. Especially after such a long, cold night in Eastern Oregon. “We found him.”  I can feel myself breathe again. Everything is going to be fine. I’ll have to wait until tomorrow to feel his reassuring hugs. I’ll have to wait until tomorrow to hear the stories, there is no battery left now. I’ll have to wait until tomorrow to let him know how proud of him I am. But for now, we can all rest a little easier and perhaps get some sleep tonight.
