Now that everyone in my family is safe and back home, I think it’s time for another refashion. An easy one, though, since I’m still reeling a bit from last weekend’s “adventure“.
If you’ve got a little girl in your life and you make one of these dresses, you’ll never look at a sweater the same again. So many possibilities…..
Isn’t this label great!
Use a well fitting t-shirt for a pattern.
Cut around the t-shirt, leaving a half inch for a seam.
Turn the sweater inside out and sew the side seams, starting at the bottom to keep the bottom edge together. Then cut the sleeve length to fit.
Turn inside out and sew up the sides of the sleeves to fit.
Place the sleeves back into the armholes, right sides together, pin and sew.
And now you’ve got a sweet little sweater dress for a cute little girl in your life.
I’m pretty sure Brookie, has a modeling career ahead of her. That is if she can find the time after all of her hunting, fishing, four wheeling and horse riding adventures with her mom and dad. 🙂

Do you think I can make a big girl sweater dress for myself following the same idea? 🙂
Zhenya
I know YOU could do it! 😉
I am going to try! I thrifted a cable knit sweater thinking I could pull it off like a simple baggy one, well then I cam home washed it and I guess it all stretched out! So I am going to try! Thanks for the idea!
I’m excited to see it! I love sweater dresses big and small. I found a green woman’s sweater dress at a thrift store in Boise. I didn’t have t refashion it at all. It has buttons down the front and I just button the middle ones and leave the rest open. I wear it with tapered jeans and flats. I love it and I’d wear it everyday if I could. Have fun with your sweater dress project and be sure to post it when you finish!! We all want to see it!
Happy Saturday,
Beth
love it beth, but is that snow i see on the ground…yipes!
Oh my gosh, yes! SNOW! Buster and Heather just bought a ten acre place up above Summerville. I’m so excited for them. They had so much snow the other day they built a snowman! Anthony Lakes, Here We Come!!! Miss you!
Beth
Beth, you have done it again! So sweet. That label IS great. Tutorial looks very easy to follow. Fantastic job!
Thank you so much for the encouraging words!
Happy sewing!
Beth
this is so insanely adorable…must make for little cousin stat
Little cousin will be one lucky girl!!
She must absolutely be the most stylish 5? 6? year-old on the block, and the envy of all her friends. 😉 You have styled her well, Beth.
Thanks, Cara! It’s super fun to sew for a four year old little girl. She loves to come to my house and play dress up in the refashion stash. My daughter in law just showed my the Hanna Andersson website, and now I want to try refashioning all the cute little dresses on there.
Hope your Saturday is filled with goodness!Beth
Argh, I was going to say 4! I’ve been out of nannying too long.
So much fun, to create outfits for such an easily pleased clientele. To see her eyes get big and wide, so excited to wear her new outfit. I admit, I still make that face every once and while. 😉
In your defense, Cara, she is tall for her age. Her dad is 6’4″ and her mom is tall too. She was almost ten pounds when she was born. Pretty sure we have a basketball player in the making.
Wow! Well, hopefully with all that height she measures up — pun intended 😉
🙂 Pun accepted 🙂
You are an awesome Grandma, Brooke will always have the latest fashion. She is an adorable model. Can’t wait to see what you make next.
Why thanks, Penny! Means so much coming from the mostest awesomeness Grandma, EVER! Stayed tuned for more Brooke refashions. Heather showed me the Hanna Andersson website, now I want to try to make all those dresses for her.
A true refashion princess~lucky granddaughter!
Just got a picture of her standing by the elk her mom just got.
just great–An idea I coul try for my granddaughter out of grandpas old sweater!
Oh that would be so sweet. She would have a little bit of grandpa with her.
Your little model is so adorable! 🙂
Thanks! 🙂
Isn’t she cute! now, you have almost sold me to try this one on my almost 5 yo… ok, now on the look out for a nice sweater…
I so hope you try this! Once you make one, no sweater will ever be safe again! I’ve got a pile of ’em to make into dresses.
So, so cute! I wish I had a little one to sew for!
Thank you! I wish you had a little girl to sew for, too. It’s so much fun!
This is AMAZING! Looks like my little girl will be getting one of these next winter 🙂 x
This is adorable, Beth. I don’t know how I missed your post on 10 Ways to Refashion a Sweater, but it’s my all-time favorite. I need to clean out my closet and have some old sweaters that I could finally put to use. I also have a sewing machine that’s been tucked away in a closet for much too long. I’m thinking some of these refashions would make great Christmas gifts. Love your blog, Beth.
New follower here! Absolutely love this idea. Used to refashion lots but drifted away from it of late, been needing time & inspiration. So glad to have your blog & this post. Adorable pics, looks very cosy for the winter 🙂
Very sweet! I’ve been wanting to make my little one a sweater dress too. You beat me to it…
The sweater dresses are so much fun and super easy to make. I made two more today. I can’t wait to see yours!
Happy Thanksgiving!

I never am sure how to cut the arm hole on the sweater and make the correct angle for the sleeves to attach them. could you give me some tips. I love all of your recycled items.
I usually lay a t shirt that fits well on top of the sweater and use that to determine the angle. Hope that helps.
Let me know if you have any other questions.
Do you have to do anything special to your sewing machine to make it sew on the sweater? I’m afraid of unraveling…? I found your pattern/instructions on Pinterest & am so excited to try this for my own 4-year old Brooke!
That is the question I get most often. I actually just use a regular basic sewing machine to do all my refashions. Once you sew the seam, the sweater won’t unravel. You’ll be surprised. Good luck and I’d love to see your sweater dress when you’re finished!!
Beth
Where has your website been all my life?! I’m somewhat new to sewing, and am so glad I found all your expertise to help guide me. I’m headed downstairs now to pull out all my old sweaters, and I’m making this sweater dress RIGHT NOW!! (We’ll see if I have any left for myself at the end.) My daughter will be ecstatic about wearing it to school. Like your daughter, mine is a little fashionista. Don’t you just love it! Stay calm and keep sewing, Jill
I haven’t done much yet, but I have refashioned some clothes for my granddaughter–t-shirts to dresses or tunics. I just love reading and imagining! The only problem is that I don’t have room in my house to organize the necessary stuff. My older cousin, my mom, and my dad died in the last nine years and their stuff is all over the house. I did make my way to the sewing machine today, but the stack of mending there got me off-track. Of course it needed doing and some clothing is now wearable, so no great loss. I will get to that cute peplum skirt and the t-shirt shrug soon, though. I have the raw material already. My granddaughter will love the t-shirt dress. I have some really cute trims I could use when I get it made.
I made this for my daughter. I also took the sweater scraps and made a headband. It turned out very well!
What a great idea to make a headband from the scraps!!!
