Upcycle a Vintage Vera Sheet Set to a Cute Skirt

It was the strangest sound.

I noticed it as soon as I woke up that morning. Not that I recognized it right away. All I comprehended was the feeling it gave me. So relaxed, calm and serene but not sure why. I went about my usual routine, wondering what was different this particular morning, but I couldn’t quite put my finger on it.

And then, at around mile five of my fifteen mile drive to work, through the rural Grande Ronde Valley, it dawned on me.  Why the change? Why so relaxed? It was a slow realization, not like the kind that hits you square in the face, but it was that slightly green winter wheat field on the left side of the highway that made me start to understand the sound.

We’d gotten so used to it. It had become a constant. Running from the house to the car. Fighting it as I drove across the marsh each day. The high pitched moan coming through the ill fitting windows of my classroom. Everything so hectic, so frantic, and so exhausting. It was almost deafening when it quit. But it actually took me awhile to realize what it was.

Finally, after weeks, it had stopped.

The gale force wind was gone.

Ahhhhhhhhhhh!!!!! What a relief!

But, do you know what the best thing about that is?

It means, spring really IS right around the corner.

You see, Eastern Oregon has this wonderful way of giving you a glimpse into the warmer months ahead, just when you need it most. It’s perfect. Like it knows you need a break. Like it’s trying to say, you CAN do it, you CAN make it through this.

I love the weather here. Exactly three months of each season. To me, its just right. It would be hard for me to live in a place where one or more of the seasons were missing because I enjoy each one.

That means less than a month of winter left. Sooooooo, I thought it would be fun to have a pre-season spring refashion today. Something to give you a reassuring glimpse into the warmer months ahead.

Check out this thrift store sheet and pillowcase that I’ve had for over a year. When I pulled it out and unfolded it, I got a big surprise. I didn’t notice the signature when I snagged it during one of the two dollar bag sales.

YAY! Can you believe it???!!!?

A vintage Vera sheet set!

Score!!!

Vera Neumann was an American artist whose built an empire in the fifties, sixties and seventies putting her colorful graphic designs on linens and scarves. Her work was even loved by the likes of Marilyn Monroe and John Lennon. There are many sites out there dedicated to this talented woman but here is a good link if you’d like to learn more about her work.

I wanted to try out the floral and stripe trend. This sheet and shirt wiggled their way out of my stash and volunteered to be made into a skirt and top.

Last weekend, I made my custom skirt pattern. I really do feel like I could take over the world now, just like Corienne Leigh said I would in her Craftovision tutorial “How to Draft a Custom Skirt Pattern” on You Tube. She walks you through the whole process from drafting the pattern to finishing up with a zipper, blind hem and waistband. I highly recommend her series if you’d like to give sewing without commercial patterns a try. The only thing I did differently from her tutorial is add a lining by cutting out the same front and back pieces and sewing it in with the zipper and the waistband.

And since Spring really IS just right around the corner, I’m now ready for it with my new custom Vera floral skirt!!!

If it’s cold where you are, I hope this warms you up a bit and gives you a reassuring glimpse into the warmer months ahead.

Upcycle a thrift store sweater to cozy warm boot socks with this new sew tutorial by the Renegade Seamstress

A couple weeks ago, I was invited to spend the weekend at my friend’s cabin near the Anthony Lakes Ski Resort. Of course, I couldn’t show up with a regular tote so I upcycled a thrift store sweater to a make this Winter Sweater Tote.

It was made from the body of this old sweater.

The sleeves were given to my good friend, Linda, as a hostess gift. And in no time, without doing a bit of sewing, she was rockin’ them as cute leg warmers.

Upcycle a Thrift Store Sweater Just in Time For Valentine’s Day

Upcycle a thrift store sweater with this easy to follow photo tutorial by the Renegade Seamstress just in time for Valentine's Day.

Thrift store clothes amaze me.

Even after all these years of shopping second hand, I’m still thrilled when I find quality clothing for very little moolah. And even better, they don’t even have to fit when you know how to alter and refashion.

All it takes is an eye for possibilities.

Take this thrift store sweater and shirt for example:

The shirt was stained and the sweater was too big. Each cost fifty cents on half price day at my local thrift store. YAY!

The sweater was a quality brand and I loved the colors together. Perfect for a cardigan with plaid elbow patches.

I wanted to keep the existing raglan sleeves so I took it in using the existing seams. Just pin, sew and trim to fit. I also took in the side seams the same way.

Pullover sweaters don’t do too much to flatter me, so I decided to make this into a cardigan using the red plaid shirt for trim and elbow patches.

Then, since Valentine’s Day is fast approaching, I thought a plaid heart elbow patch would be fun.

Create Your Own Custom Skirt and Take Over the World :)

Good morning and Happy Saturday!!!

Check out this great Custom Skirt video on You Tube that I found this morning. She shows you how to draft a custom pattern and how to construct the skirt complete with an invisible zipper, a blind hem, and waistband.

You could use this when sewing from scratch or when upcycling thrift store clothes for the just the right fit.

I know what my next project will be. The navy and white polka dot fabric from the thrift store is PERFECT for this.

Stay tuned………

Let me know if you try this, too. I’d love to post your finished skirt pictures.

An Easy Winter Sweater Tote Refashion Tutorial

Learn how to refashion an old sweater into a tote with this easy to follow photo tutorial from The Renegade Seamstress

Lucky me! I got to spend the weekend at Anthony Lakes Ski Resort. Even though the temperature was in the single digits we had a great time. The band Standard Deviation was rockin’ the Starbottle Saloon, the snow was perfect and the sun even made an appearance. It was just what I needed.

Of course, a girl can’t just bring a regular bag up to the mountain. 🙂 This called for a quick sweater refashion. I think it took me longer to decide which sweater to use than to actually make this totebag. I chose a wool sweater that was about 80% wool. It felted slightly after washing it in hot water and drying it on the hottest setting.

First, cut off the sleeves and the collar. The sleeves made a perfect cabin hostess gift for Linda to make some leg warmers. She was thrilled! I can’t wait to see how she styles them.

Next, you’ll need some handles. I chose to use handles from this old purse I found at my thrift store for a quarter.

Learn how to refashion an old sweater into a tote with this easy to follow photo tutorial from The Renegade Seamstress

Decide how big you’d like your bag and cut identical pieces from your sweater, interfacing and lining. You’ll need two of each.

A Winter Tote5

Place the right sides of your sweater together and sandwich it between the two pieces of interfacing. Pin and sew three sides, leaving the top open.

Stitch across the bottom corners.

Right sides together, stitch three sides of your lining together, leaving the top open. Leave an opening in the bottom seam.

Turn the sweater right side out, pin handle, slide sweater into lining so right sides are together.

I started with this ribbon to attach the handle, but later changed my mind and used part of the sweater left overs. I apologize for not having a picture, but I attached it the same way as the ribbon.

Pin and sew the lining to the sweater around the top including the handle attachment.

Now you’re ready to turn it all right side out. Bring it all through the opening you left in the lining.

Pin and sew the opening closed.

Tuck the lining back inside the bag, fill it with some goodies and you’re ready to rock the mountain.

Thanks again, Linda! I had a great time!

An Easy T-Shirt Refashion

Learn how to refashion an old thrift store t shirt into a fresh new shirt with cut out sleeves

Inspiration can be found in the strangest places. Who would’ve thought that a TV series about a funeral home would inspire this next refashion.

I’ve been unexpectedly enjoying the HBO series Six Feet Under. Claire showed up in episode five wearing the perfect shade of eggplant to go with her beautiful complexion and red hair. Not only was it just the right color for her but it had these fun cut outs on the sleeve.

I needed to give it a try.

This was supposed to be my experiment shirt. Just to see if it would work.

The Renegade Seamstress shows you how to make an old t shirt new again with this easy sleeve refashion tutorial.

A Happy Birthday Renegade Ruffle Refashion

Thrift store clothes upcycled

How about instead of Resolutions on this last day of 2012 we do a

Renegade Ruffle Refashion.

But first, I’d like to wish Jan a Happy Birthday!!! I’m so lucky to have such a loving, kind, and caring sister who, even though we live thousands of miles apart, is always there for me. She lifts me up when I’m down and encourages me every day.

Happy Birthday Jan! I love you!

sisters5

I think the shirt says it all. She’s such a good friend to me now.

Here we are wearing, what we called, our matching ketchup and mustard dresses that mom  made for us. Jan’s dress was red, mine was yellow.

sisters6

A Christmas morning picture of us:

sisters4

Ok, now, doesn’t everyone have a bathtub picture like this?

sisters3

Jan cooking for me even back then.

sisters

I just wish we lived closer to each other so I could throw on this newly refashioned outfit and take you out for a birthday dinner.

Happy Birthday Jan! Hope you have a great day!!!

Next up, the refashion:

Polka dot and stripe combinations have been catching my eye lately so this frumpy thrift store frock was my next victim er…. I mean project.

DIY ruffle shirt refashion tutorial

After cutting off the bottom and cutting out the zipper, I turned it backwards to use the back as the front.

Pin and sew new neckline.

Right sides together, sew then press new front center seam.

Pin, sew and trim sides seams to fit.

The fabric I was using was polyester so I put a zig zag stitch next to the new seam to keep it from fraying.

Hem the bottom of the shirt.

To make a pattern for your flounce ruffle, measure the length of the desired ruffle and that will be the middle circle of your pattern. The width of the circle will be the width of your ruffle.

Cut two ruffles and make some matching bias tape. (I really do have a bias tape tutorial coming up soon. :))

Cut through each of the ruffles.

Pin and sew the bias tape on the outside of the ruffle.

Turn under the inside edge of the flounce once and sew.

Starting at the shoulder, pin and sew each ruffle along the new neckline and down the front center seam. My ruffle stops at the waistline.

I really wanted to show off the entire outfit. The skirt was made from scratch today using an existing skirt as a pattern and some nice navy micro suede fabric I’ve had for years. The striped cardigan was resized and refashioned yesterday. But, dang it, my photographer was chukar hunting  so I had to take my own after photos.

Thanks to you, sewing has been really enjoyable for me this past year.

Please let me know if you have an idea for an upcoming tutorial, I’d love to get your ideas for new things to try.

Here’s to great things coming your way in 2013!!!

Happy New Year!
