Let’s face it, winter can be cold, dark and sometimes seem to last forever. But, growing up in Minnesota taught me to find ways to enjoy winter.
As kids, we didn’t let the sub zero temperatures stop us from having a good time. We laughed in the face of “Old Man Winter”. We knew how to bundle up and go outside to sled on the Mounds View hill, ice skate at our neighborhood skating rink, or ski at Afton Alps. We built snow forts and snow men. And yes, sometimes we stayed out too long and sat next to the fire holding our toes in pain as they thawed out. But that didn’t stop us from going back out and doing it all over again.
I may not spend quite as much time outside during the winter as I used to, but I still try to find ways to have fun during the long, cold, windy winters of Oregon. Like making these cute pom pom sweater hats.
They are super easy to make. All you need is an old sweater with a pattern you like, some yarn, a little cardboard and you’re ready to brighten up those dark days by making new sweater hats for you and all of your friends.
No need to just endure winter.
Embrace it, add some “hattitude, and go out there to enjoy winter while looking good in your new pom pom sweater hat.

This is a cute idea. There should be enough sweater fabric available to make matching hats for young friends or their siblings. Very well-written tutorial, as usual 🙂

I need to go dig through my closet now and find me a shrunk sweater and make me some hats! Have you ever tried this technique with an old sweatshirt? I wonder if that would work as well? Hugs! P.S. – I need to try making some for our dogs too!
HA! I LOVE the idea of making one for your dog, too. You could have matching hats! Someone suggested making matching hats for a little girl and her doll. I thought that was a great idea, too!
