Wrap Up in Style in a DIY Wool Blanket Coat

Look!

Is it a cape? Is it a shawl? Is it a poncho?

NO!

It’s a BLANKET COAT…

and apparently, all the major designers have them in their 2014 fall collections. You can be right on trend and easily make one from a blanket you might already have around the house.

My sweet husband says I’ll be the best dressed mom at the state football playoffs next weekend. I love him!!!

(And yes, Cooper’s football team made the state playoffs!!! I’m so excited for them!)

I found this wool blanket at my thrift store awhile back and have been waiting for just the right moment to use it.

It’s so soft and I love the fact that, like me, it made it’s way out west from Minnesota.

  4. Anita Jayne says:

My friends call me a lizard, because I can’t handle the cold! This would be perfect … if it wasn’t for the fact we’re entering the hottest months in Australia! I’ll have to do this once winter comes around again!

  5. Julie Toyne says:

My favorite part of receiving your refashion ideas is how you break them down into achievable steps. Thanks!

  6. cathy diacetis says:

How cute is that! Had to tell you….my friend, Helen, in Sacramento has a friend who is buying your book! I told Helen about your book signing party and your DIY blog who in turn told her friend who is getting your book. Now you’re really famous!!! Happy November and oh yes, congrats to Coopers team! 7. Diane Ramey says:

Absolutely love this little number! Don’t have a blanket, but I have a length of nubby wool plaid, old enough it could qualify as ‘vintage’, that never quite made it into a suit. It would be perfect! Always love your inspirations Beth 🙂

  8. Ann in PA says:

Love, Love, Love your designs! Everything looks cute and stylish….not “homemade”. Love to win that book. Thanks for a great giveaway.

  9. Trudy Callan says:

I love how warm and stylish this looks and how quick and easy it is to make. How many of us throw a blanket on at the games to keep warm? But it is in no way stylish. It looks like we just crawled out of bed. Now you can have both, warmth and style. I might make this for my teen daughter Emily.

  10. Kimberly says:

I like all of the refashions that you do. I do believe this is one my favorite.

  11. lindsayscalco says:

WOW! This looks so great. Now I need to keep an eye out for a cool blanket. I love it!

  12. smenzmer says:

Love this idea! Now I need to find a blanket to use at the thrift store. . . Just pinned, and I sure hope I win the book! I need all the inspiration I can get!!! 🙂

  13. martyjane64@gmail.com says:

Your ideas make ME happy! 🙂 Keep doin’ what you’re doin’ please. I’m off to the deep dark spaces of my closets to find a cute wool blanket… 😉

  15. YES! YES! YES! I would definitely sport one of these “blanket coats”. Just the name alone gives me the warm and fuzzies!!

    • I’m so glad you like this Tondra Denise! You need all the warm and fuzzies you can get after your flood. So hard for you and your family, I’m sure. You are an inspiration!

      • Wow, this was three years ago? I’ve been meaning to make one of these since you first posted this. I’m in Southern CA and our cold season is minimal, but during last week’s football game all I could think about was this blanket coat… and how I wished I had one! I came here today specifically for this tutorial because… that’s the power of the blog!!!! Thanks again for your inspiration!

  16. Debbie says:

You are so inspiring. Makes me wish I was back in Michigan and not in South Texas during football season . . .

  17. love it!… I’m just not sure how it will look on a less than perfect body??? but, still might try it!

  18. Another fine job Beth! I am loving those belt loop holes. Provides the perfect cinch for the waist. Fringe at the bottom is darling too.

    • Thanks, Tamika! Without the belt loop holes, it was just too bulky for this body, maybe if I was teeny, I could wrap the belt around all of it. As soon as I put in the belt loop holes the fit was much more flattering. I’m loving the fringe too this fall. If I could, I’d have it on everything. 🙂 Have a wonderful Sunday!

  19. What a great idea. That looks so cute, cozy, and comfy.

  20. Lu Ann says:

I am going to pick up my new sewing machine tomorrow, after deciding that I needed to attempt to learn again (haven’t sewed since jr. high when I was in 4-H!). I want this to be one of my first projects – I am in love with it!

  21. Debbie says:

I have a question, what brand of dress form do you use? I am looking for one and would like some suggestions. Thanks

  22. Love this! It looks so warm, yet stylish. Can’t wait to make one.

  23. Cecile says:

So nice ! As I found a blanket like this a few days ago, I’ll do the same ! Thanks a lot for the tutorial. 🙂

  24. Cindy Truman says:

I just found you! A refashioned men’s shirt (not yours) had a dead end link. That prompted me to search “DIY refashioned clothes” on PInterest. And there you were. I’m enjoying sifting through your blog – you’ve brightened up this cold and dreary November day in NH for me. Your enthusiasm for life shines through! I’d love a copy of your book! Thanks for tutorials and a chance to win!

  25. Anne says:

I am so impressed by your refashions! The look so high end and professional! Who would ever know?!
Count me in for the giveaway! My daughter would love refashions!

  29. Mari says:

So genius. This is absolutely stunning. The creative use of the belt “makes” the outfit. It is so unique and so much more attractive than simply belting around the front and back. Your husband is right – you will look fabulous and oh so chic at the football games. I love this.
Please include me in your giveaway offer. You do indeed make refashions appear not only doable but extremely fashionable. Thanks so much for another great tutorial.

  30. Sue V. says:

Love your blanket coat. So smart and chic! I’d love to win your giveaway. Thanks for the opportunity!

  31. mari says:

Once again, you look great in your creation….they are all the rage right now! I am going through all my blankets in the cupboard to see what will work. Thanks Beth.

  32. Cary says:

This looks great! I can just imagine sitting around a campfire wrapped up in a blanket coat. Looks great with the skinny jeans and boots. Hope your team does well!

  33. Oh this is wonderful! Cozy and very flattering at the same time — that’s a feat!

  34. lucindalines says:

Wow, I think I could actually do this. Amazing!

  35. Tabitha Klucking says:

Pinned it to my sewing projects category–Great idea! http://www.pinterest.com/pin/121386152432325116/

  36. Debbie Conley says:

Love, love, love this! I have been following you for some time now. We have very much the same body shape. I have a higher waist and love your repurposed t shirt dresses as they seem to show off the waistline for us shorter waisted gals. On the poncho what size was the blanket approx.?
    Thanks!

  37. Nay says:

Oh how I’ve missed your work – I kind of forgot to check my blog reader over the last 6 months! Is your book available in Australia?

  38. abby says:

I LOVE your blog and this is adorable! I pinned you and would love to win a copy of your book

  39. Carol Faulkner says:

Oh my. I just have to have one of these blanket wrap coat thingies. One could just throw it on and take off. You are so talented. I would love to win your book.

  42. Very good article. I absolutely appreciate this site. Keep it up!

  43. Candace says:

Hello! I just found your DIY blog and I am in LOVE! This particular refashion though has to be my favorite! I have been looking for a coat like this, but most floated too far away from the body, looked unflattering and had no closures. This is perfect though! I was wondering if it would be possible to also add belt holes in the back so that the belt wraps all the way around to keep it more secure around the waist and add warmth? I was not sure if this would mess up the look and style or functionality of the coat? Thanks so much!

    • HI Candace! Welcome to The Renegade Seamstress! Thank you so much for your kind words. Yes, I think adding belt holes in the back would work too. Have fun with this project and let me know if you have any more questions.
