We started in early April with a dozen eggs fresh from the farmyard. Loaded up the handy dandy Turn-X Automatic Incubator. Fired it up, and ……..
waited and……
waited and…….
waited and……
waited until………
Twenty one long days later…..
after much work, out popped a baby chick.
(You can see a short video of one of our chicks actually hatching here.) Be prepared for some cheering!
My expectant students already had names ready and a decorated nursery!
Seriously, I get to spend the day with some of THE sweetest five year olds on the planet!!!!

This is so sweet! I love animals… We have a goose nesting right outside the cafeteria at work. Papa Goose is starting to hang around again, so the eggs will be hatching any day now!

I love this! I’ve spent many happy years with the sweetest FIRST graders in the world, so I especially enjoyed seeing your students’ art and writing! 🙂
I used to teach first grade, too! I love first grade art! I used to want to buy some of it from them, frame it and put it on my wall at home. Where do you teach now?

I have drawings of my husband and me in a frame on top of my frig that one of my students gave me. 🙂 I started writing for educational publishers while I was teaching and now do that full time (www.edwriter.com). It’s so much fun, but I do miss seeing the kids and my teacher friends every day!

I started by sending book ideas based on activities I used in my classroom to places like Carson-Dellosa and Evan-Moor. Then, after my first couple of books came out, I sent out resumes and started getting assignments from different publishers. Now I work for Benchmark Education Company in New York from my home in Kansas. It’s the perfect job for me! 🙂 Try sending some lessons, management tips, etc. in to Mailbox, Instructor, and other teacher magazines . . . you’ll find their writer’s guidelines on their websites. And feel free to contact me through the edwriter site if I can do anything to help! You’d be a natural at this! 🙂

The chicks at our school just hatched this week, too. Two the first day and seven the next. Peeps are everywhere! LOL 🙂
Isn’t it fascinating! We’ve been hatching chicks for 9 years and it NEVER gets old.

Awww…so fun! Hailey is doing this in her Kindergarten class too! She is sooo excited about it and talks about it all the time. The next time she goes to school will be Tuesday and they are supposed to hatch on that day!!!

I know I knew this, though I think I may have forgotten you were (are) a teacher. May I just say you have “the” perfect teacher’s voice. The kind filled with sparkles and light — I still remember my kindergarten teacher with fondness. I honestly think of all the teachers we have growing up, the ones we have as youngens, are the ones we remember best. You will be no exception.
That. Was. So. Cool!!! And I had a giggle when you turned the camera on your class. One of your little boys’ mind’s was completely and utterly blown! LOL! His mouth was a giant “O”.

Actually the voice you heard was that of my new assistant, Valerie. Mine isn’t quite as sing songy. She has a set of three year old twins at home and has the perfect voice for that.
Well, then you must let me hear your voice sometime. I have no doubt it’s equally shiny and luminous. 🙂
So cute. My daughter is in reception class at school (first year of full time in UK, all the kids turn 5 while in reception). Someone brought some chicks in to show her class. I wish I could have been a fly on the wall. I bet your class absolutely loved doing this.
Oh yes, they are spell bound the entire time! And their parents tell me it is all they talk about from the time we put them in the incubator. There is just something about a baby chick that brings out the best in all of us!

I want to do this here in Luxor! Although at this time of the year the trick is to keep the eggs cool rather than hot! It reaches 45 degrees! And still hot in the flat at night!
I think you’re fine no matter what the temperature. The incubator keeps them at a constant 100 degrees.
We’re just getting into our spring weather here. Still pretty comfortable. Sounds like you’re quite hot.

I am going to make an incubator as trying to buy them here is impossible! I am trying an ancient duck egg incubator, which is literally over 3.000 years old, to see if it works. A little experimental archaeology! It’s terracotta!
Now THAT is amazing! I’d love to see it. I hope you post pictures!
