A DIY Spring T Shirt Refashion

As the youngest of four children, I’m used to hand-me-downs.

Since I’ve started refashioning, hand-me-downs have now become a treat!

Not only do the thrift stores supply my new habit, but my friends have been joining in and donating to my obsession.

Here’s a t shirt that was in a bag from Jakkie.

Now let’s get this party started!

I just had to show off my 75 cent thrift store shoes.

Here’s a few other ideas for styling your new shirt:

This was a fun and easy refashion. Think I’m going to make one in every color!

If you try this, I’d love to see pictures!

    i’m loving the ruffles!!! 😉

  2. Stepping My Way to Bliss says:

Love this! How are you making the ruffles? Are they from the sides you trimmed off?

  3. Cara Olsen says:

Okay . . . that shirt is seriously cute, but are you stinkin’ kidding me?!? .75 cents?! Those are adorable, Beth. You find another pair, just go on and buy them and I will send you three quarters in the mail, plus cost of shipping. 🙂

Also, wanted to tell you that your tutorials have been so nicely laid out recently. I have noticed the time and effort you have put into making every step of the way appealing to the reader.

    Happy Sat!

    • Thanks for noticin’ Cara! (Be sure to read that with a Minnesotan accent)

My friend gave me, yes…. gave me her old Canon Rebel XT. So I’ve been experimenting with the new camera and Photoshop. I’m having so much fun, just wish I didn’t have to work full time (Maybe I should say “get to work full time”) Then I’d be doing this 24/7.

I’ll keep my eyes open for some more shoes!!!!

      Hugs, Beth

  4. Molly says:

You are amazing! Love this t-shirt!!

  5. Ms. Fastspeed says:

Excellent! I’m wondering if my brother would give me his old t-shirts and if I could make this. There’s only one way to find out!

  6. Meris says:

    Wow! That is awesome.
Did you leave the sleeve openings raw or did you sew up a hem around the arm? I’m not sure whether I should finish the sleeves or leave them raw on the shirt I’m working on. Especially if I need to make some cuts that are angled across the grain in order to make the sleeves fit better.

    • I just left them raw for now because I’ll most likely wear something over it. But if I end up wearing it this summer by itself I might finish the sleeves.
      Thanks for visiting!
      Beth

  7. Wow, I’m seriously impressed. The tshirt looks fab 🙂

  8. I adore the ruffles and also that this shirt would be so comfy since it was originally a t-shirt! Very impressive resourcefulness, Beth:)

  9. Bat Ma'am says:

BEAUTIFUL JOB! I’ve never tried ruffles, I can see I need to! LOVE the jacket in the last photo, that’s adorable! 🙂

    • Thanks so much!! I’m so glad you like the jacket, I picked it up for a couple bucks at the Salvation Army a few years ago. It’s cute AND it fits me perfectly without any alterations. (That’s usually unheard of for me)
Have a great Saturday and thanks again for visiting!

    • Ha Ha! Not this time :). Jakkie gave me a bag of old t shirts to use. Thanks for noticin’ the pictures! (Be sure to say that in a Minnesotian accent) I’ve been learning my new (to me) camera and photoshop and getting a little carried away. This is a blast and I’m totally hooked!

Ive always wanted to get ideas how to make an blah tshirt fit better.. love this idea.. ive not really sewn much, think a beginner can do it???
i am a resale junkie, so just gotta tell ya love the deal on the shoes! it is addictive to shop those stores… my hubby is amazed at all the great stuff i bring home…not thrilled at the amount tho!!! hard to say no to some things!!

    • I hear ya about the thrift store addiction! My daughter was teasing me about sitting outside our thrift store on morning waiting for them to open. She said, “Mom, it’s like a crack house” 🙂 Funny but a little true. I get such an adrenaline rush each time I get a good deal on something.
I bet you could resize a shirt for yourself. I have several tutorials on this. You can always give me a shout if you need some help. Have a good day!

Love the shoes and love the tip on machine ruffling, I’ll definitely be trying that! Just curious – does the weight of the ruffles pull on the neckline?

  29. Simone Araujo says:

I love your refashions! I live in Brazil and people don´t do this (It´s sad)! Your blog is the best discovery I did this year! Thank you very much for share (??) !! (Sorry for my bad english)

I love this little tee! I’ve found recently that crew neck shirts just don’t look as good on me as they used to. (That age thing!) I have a closet full of them that could be repurposed. Thanks for the idea!

  33. tealandtulle says:

So impressive! The ruffled details on the shirt look so professional! Thanks for sharing these ideas and making it look so dang easy. 🙂

  34. Just love it – who’d have thought that baggy tee could look hot? I’ll be trying this myself. I’m having a case of shoe envy too (and ticket envy, our thrift shops cost more than yours!)

    • I hope you try this! It’s so fun and easy to do!
We are lucky with our little thrift store. I went in last Tuesday, looking for a couple of things and she handed me a bag and said it was bag sale day. Fill a bag for $2.00. I managed to find enough to fill the bag.
      Thanks for visiting!
      Beth

  35. Love it. The colour really suits you. The green shoes + purse are awesome as well.

  36. oldvogue says:

Great idea! You make it seem so simple!

  37. huffyron says:

Wow, your t-shirt is great! Now, if only I could find my portable sewing machine. Oh, who am I kidding, it’s so old I can’t find replacement parts. But seriously, you should be a stylist — your blog is marvelous.

  45. Well that’s just the most amazing thing I’ve seen in ages! I’ve not heard of refashioning – probably because Oklahoma is about 2 years behind everyone else in the country AND I don’t sew at all – But I LOVE this!! Following you now for sure because canning is great but this looks like magic to me!

    • Oh it’s so nice to have new friends! Thanks for the follow and your encouragement. Up until now I’ve mostly posted sewing and craft projects, but now that summer is almost here, I’m hoping to post more about my canning adventures.
I can’t wait to see what you have in store!
      Beth

      • I was going to take pictures this weekend but it’s been cloudy the whole time! I’ve got about 10 new recipes (for the specialty nano-canning book) – However, I will be picking your brain on pickling! I can get beets, peppers, and okra down well but cukes crispness seems to elude me!

        • I tried a great recipe for refrigerator pickles last fall and they are so crisp and good. Taste just like Claussen pickles. No processing involved and they stay good for a year in the fridge. We are still enjoying them.

        • Hey I just noticed you published an e book for Kindle. How cool! I was just looking into this the other day and put it on my list of things to do this summer. Congratulations! I might need to get your help on this, too.

          • Yes! it was a great experience and continues to be! The pictures I mentioned before were for the follow up nano-canning book for specialty jams. It’s taken a long time for me to get the recipes good, safe, and correct for very very small batch canning. If you need help just let me know! I will be happy to do it!

  46. I love it! Reuse, resource and recycle are all great ideas, but managing to do this and have the end product actually better than the parts is brilliant!

  47. marlandphotos says:

Very frugal! Nice idea. Thanks for stopping by my blog.

  48. Bonnie says:

  60. gaiamethod says:

Wow! That is so good!!! I wish I had the creativity for this but I just can’t ‘see’ it. Spinning, knitting and wool craft? That I can see. But I hate waste and would dearly love to be able to do this!!! Nice job!!!

  83. Cara says:

Hi! I love this and tried the ruffling technique but it didn’t work on my Bernina…longest stitch length and highest tension? What did I miss? Thanks!

  84. Alison says:

    Beth,
Just found this, and I so want to try it. You said, “set your machine to highest tension and longest stitch length for automatic ruffler” …. does that mean you have to have a ruffler attachment? I’ve never done that before (have to look and see if I have a foot or attachment for that).

    Thanks,
    Alison

  87. Trenie says:

Hi There, My name is Trenie, a senior that recently moved to Mexico and ran across your wesite (or blog, sinces I am not familar with all the terms) and enjoyed the newly designed T-shirt. When i moved here I came with only 2 suitcases in hand, knowing that I had always wanted to live here. With that said, I liked the T-shirt very much and even tho I am not a “seamstress” I am fairly certain that I could make one. My sewing machine (one of the first portable Singer machines ever made, early to mid 1930’s) was left in storage in Ca. but would like to get it soon on one of my return trips to the US. It may take a few months but would like to follow you so when I do get the machine I will have a few of your choices to make one of your items. Also, of course love the shoes but at this stage of the game better stick to “flip-flops” due to the cobblestone streets and my “experienced” age lol..
Lookng forward to seeing new items that you have “designed”, Trenie
