Frumpaliciousness to Deliciousness

Frumpaliciousness to Deliciousness

OK so here’s my attempt at refashioning a thrift store skirt to a dress. Loved the colors and the pattern but the style was so unflattering to my short pear shaped self. I just took in the sides a bit, trimmed the seam and used the trimmings to make two small shoulder straps. Paired with this jacket, belt and boots, it just might work.

Next time I’ll try to have a head. 🙂

Old 80s leather jacket to twenty twelve bag

I’ve never made a leather bag before but, when I saw this jacket at the Salvation Army for four bucks, I knew I had to give it a try.

I looked at this project as an experiment. I wasn’t sure if my machine would sew on leather, but I went ahead and bought some leather needles 110/18 and just started cutting.

I cut 4 pieces, 7 inches x 13 inches and one piece 13 inches by 19 inches.

My friend gave the skirt you saw in the first picture.  I was going to use that for the lining, but when I tried it on, I saw there was potential for a refashioned skirt so I switched and used some IKEA fabric I had left over from a curtain project for the lining. (You might see the skirt in a future post).

The bag handles were made from 25 cent thrift store belts.

FRONT                                         BACK

A few details- The silver pin came in the basket from my friend Mari that I posted in December.

The IKEA fabric I used for the lining.

I’ll definitely be watching for more leather thrift store coats in the future. This was so much fun to make. Now I’m off to refashion that leopard print skirt so I have an outfit to wear with my new leather bag. 🙂

Meet Shey, my first Refashion Icon of the Month

Talk about talented and creative! Meet Shey, from Modesty is Pretty  This stylish kindergarten teacher from Texas really knows how to rock the refashion world. Visit her blog to see some amazing transformations and read on to be inspired.

1. In your blog, Modesty Is Pretty, you make refashioning look so easy. How did you get started in the refashioning world?
I started very young, as a little girl I would always watch my mom (who is a seamstress) altering her clothes to fit her perfectly. If I wanted a cool denim jacket that we could not afford my mom would take an old jacket of mine and make it into something cool using scraps of fabric. I learned from her but refused to try refashioning for many years, I didn’t start refashioning clothes on my own till I got my first sewing machine 3 years ago.

2. You’ve got a great sense of style. You really know how to put an outfit together. How long have you been refashioning and thrifting clothes? Thank you! I’ve been thrifting for the past 5 years and refashioning for the last 3 years. There’s this blog sewithought.wordpress.com that is wonderful, it’s by a girl that has been refashioning clothes for a long time, and she always inspired me with her refashions, once I got my sewing machine I thought “I can do this too.”
3. What is your favorite refashioned outfit?
My favorite refashioned outfit would have to be the first Laura Ashley dress I refashioned, it was a long flower print dress, it was really ugly, but I made it into a 50’s inspired version. I love that dress because it was one of my first refashioning posts and everyone left such encouraging comments I felt so happy to share it.

4. How do your kindergarten students respond to your outfits? Do they have a favorite?
My kids compliment me every day and often ask me do a cat walk with a twirl (embarrassing but they like it and it makes them giggle), they are really sweet. They always find something they like about my outfits, big confidence booster! They like that I take the time to dress nice for them.

5. You really have an amazing eye for picking out things from the thrift store that others would most likely pass by. Then you recreate them into something fabulous. Do you have any tips for figuring out which pieces will be good to refashion?
I look at magazines for inspiration. I pay attention at how clothes are made and the types of fabrics used, little details like that. I always make sure I pay attention to quality fabrics, colorful prints and patterns, once you get the eye for it, they are very easy to spy. Many times people are discouraged by the smell or the lack or organization at thrift stores, not me! I like finding things that are broken or torn because I’ll get them for cheaper and I can repair them. I also try to imagine garments not as they are but as what they will look like once I’m done refashioning them.

6. Which refashioned outfits were the most challenging for you and how did you overcome the challenges?
One of the most challenging ones was a black Laura Anshley dress I refashioned not long ago, it had big shoulder pads and it fit all wrong in the shoulders and sleeves, sleeves intimidate me a bit because I’m fairly new at sewing, I put it on and it took off so many times for fitting I was glad when  was finally done, it looked like a simple refashion but it took me a while. Another alteration that took me a while was a red coat, I went to my mom for advice and help, she’s a professional seamstress, so it’s nice to have her guide me when I’m confused about something.

Thanks to Shey for being the first Refashion Icon of the Month. You can see more of Shey’s amazing transformations at Modesty is Pretty.

Just imagine……..

Just imagine what you would do if you could have some time to do anything you wanted.

I was lucky to be able to work half time a few years ago. I used that time to just imagine what I could do if…… so I started a custom card and invitation business, called Alchemy Paperworks. How fun was that!!!!

Someone asked me the other day if I was still creating cards and custom invitations. It got me thinking how much I loved doing that. I really had the perfect life. Teaching half time and being able to have time to spend with Cooper and create. There is nothing I like better. I’ve heard people say that they feel so “alive” when they are creating. That’s exactly how I feel. I lose all track of time and space.

I think the words I chose to put on my cards really expressed the way I wanted people to feel when they bought my cards. I was lucky and had stores in Jackson Hole, Portland, La Grande, Baker City, and Minneapolis selling my cards. Every time I would get an order, I’d get giddy inside.

I use embroidered linen, corduroy, chenille, flannel, cotton, suede, denim, seersucker, any fabric at all for my paper lined fabric envelopes.

I think the pink baby collection was one of my favorites. I loved making baby shower invitations with these.

Designing my display boards and booth was just as much fun as creating the cards themselves.  Perhaps I should start selling on etsy.

One of my favorite things has always been going to the fabric store. I love touching the fabric and imagining what I could make with it. My mom gave me the biggest gift when she taught me to sew and love fabric and creating. I feel as though I’m channeling her and my sister Kathie when I’m lost in my world of creation.

I’m going to leave you with this last card. Just imagine………….

Since I’m not doing this sort of thing any more, please let me know if you’d like to purchase my stash of fabric envelopes for your own card and invitation making. I’ll give you a great deal. I just need to make room for my new refashioning hobby. I’ve got loads of pink, blue and sage green chenille envelopes, perfect for baby shower invitations or baby announcements. Many corduroy, cotton, embroidered linen, suede, and minky envelopes also remain for some crafty card maker to use. These can be sent through the mail. Just slip them in a clear envelope, put on a label and off it goes. Email me at bhunting@eoni.com if you’d like more information.

Will the real mitten tutorial, please stand up!

In one of my earlier posts, I linked you to a tutorial on making mittens. Although a great tutorial, it wasn’t the one I actually used. (Oops, my bad). After finishing this pair of mittens to go along the hat I made for you earlier, I set out to find the real link for you.

You can click here to find the real mitten tutorial http://twodancingcrows.blogspot.com/2008/10/recycled-mittens-from-wool-sweaters.html
