See Things With New Eyes: Upcycled Ruffle Sweater Dress

The Ruffle Sweater Dress

Upcycled Ruffle Sweater Dress4

It’s all about seeing things with new eyes.

Whether it’s our relationships, our situation, our home, our job, or even our old clothes. When we adjust our vision, or what we focus on, magic happens.

For instance, I love my husband dearly, but his office drives me crazy! It’s cluttered and messy. Crumpled papers litter the floor. Half full coffee cups take up space around the computer. Piles of paper and envelopes are strewn about the desks and on chairs. Things are out of place and it drives me NUTS! I used to look at all of this and get mad. After all, I spent two whole days cleaning and organizing all of this. I bought new furniture, shelves, and all of those office organizers that promise a beautiful office to work in. So you can imagine my disappointment when it gradually became cluttered and unkept again. I would immediately become furious every time I walked by and saw the unruly state of his office. I would often wonder what was wrong with a man that could live that way.

I had to adjust my vision.

When I did, magic happened.

I looked at how he chooses to spend his time with new eyes. I began to see how he has his priorities straight. He is a wonderful father and husband, he faithfully spends so much quality time with our family. He is a good friend, willing to spend his free time on weekends helping them with building projects. He is a good neighbor, always available at the drop of a hat to help someone in need. He is a good community member, donating his time to build things like new dugouts for the baseball teams. With an agenda like that, who cares if there isn’t time left over in the day to keep his office clean.

I now see him with new eyes.

When we were building our house, I was guilty of seeing all the things that weren’t accomplished yet. When I adjusted my vision, and began to focus on all the things that were completed instead, I soon became amazed at what had happened in a short amount of time.

I love it when someone reminds me to change the way I see things. As the new half time teacher was leaving at lunchtime one day, I commented that I was jealous she got to go home. She turned right around, looked me right in the eyes and told me that she was jealous that I got to stay. Oh how right she was! How lucky am I to have a full time job that I love these days. It’s all in how you look at it isn’t it.

Take this long, ugly, plain, shapeless dress, that clings to all the wrong places on my body. Let’s see if magic happens when we look at this with new eyes.

Upcycled Cashmere Peplum

upcycled cashmere peplum

A great place to find bargains at your thrift store is in the men’s section.

So often we women buy our men wonderful cashmere sweaters as gifts. We imagine ourselves snuggling up to our sweetie pie, watching movies, and feeling luxurious next to some manly cashmere.

But usually our men have other ideas. Let’s face it, cashmere just doesn’t seem to work in hunting camp or on the fishing boat. Woodsmoke and worm guts don’t seem to work with cashmere for some reason.  Needless to say, after that warm, cozy, soft sweater sits, unworn, in the closet for several years, off to the thrift store it goes.

Lucky for me!!!

upcycled cashmere peplum

upcycled cashmere peplum

I found this soft beautiful cashmere hiding behind a bunch of scratchy old acrylic sweaters at the DI for three bucks!

Score!

upcycled cashmere peplum

However, it is WAY too big and droopy!!

No problemo!

Let’s make a peplum to go with the new polka dot skirt I made using my custom skirt pattern and some fabric I found at the thrift store for a quarter. It’ll be nice for a transition outfit going into spring.

Here we go:

Turn your sweater inside out and get started.

Finish the bottom of the peplum with navy silk bias tape.

Now, I’m pretty sure this cashmere sweater is going to be much happier as a peplum being covered in perfume than it would’ve been as a man’s sweater covered in sweat, woodsmoke, and worm guts.

Upcycled Romantic and Modern Bridesmaid Dresses

Every once in awhile, I get blown away by an upcycling designer. This morning, I came across Armour sans Anguish and I thought you might like what she does, too.

All I can say is, WOW!

Armour sans Anguish garments are constructed entirely from salvaged and recycled materials. Since 2004 designer and proprietress Tawny Holt has been committed to reclaiming what might otherwise be wasted to create clothing that is at once both shamelessly romantic and wearably modern.

If you or someone you know is getting married, and you love the idea of upcycling, Armour sans Anguish is just the place for you.

Again, I’m blown away by what Tawny can do with old clothes. She’s a superstar in my book!

Easy Zippered Pouch Tutorial

Easy zippered pouch tutorial As a teacher, I find myself needing quick little presents for people throughout the year. But a teacher’s salary doesn’t allow me to be too extravagant in my gift giving. A zippered pouch is a win-win situation in my book. It uses up leftover fabric, it’s quick, and can be used for so many things. Everyone needs a good zippered pouch.

If you have a spare afternoon , you could make several pouches to have on hand. Fill them with candy, gifts cards, pop money, hand sanitizer, lip balm, travel sized lotions, or just give them empty. Your friends will love them especially if it’s hand made by you.

You will need:

Of course, you could go buy a zipper, but check out your refashion stash. You might be surprised where you can find some. Old worn out thrift store purses are an excellent source for zippers. In this case, I had an old pair of snowboard pants that Cooper had outgrown. The pants were originally a thrift store purchase so he really got his money’s worth out of them. He wore them for several years but they were now stained and ripped in a few places. I didn’t think it was something even my thrift store would want now, so instead of just throwing them away, I’m dissecting them for the zippers. And let me tell you, there are zippers all over these pants.

Oscar Worthy Upcycled Bow Clutch

Upcycled Wool Bow Clutch

As I sit here and watch the Academy Awards, I can’t help but think how choosing a refashion project is very similar to The Oscars.

(I know, just stay with me on this one 🙂 )

“And today, the nominees for best refashion possibilities are:

An  XL blue cashmere sweater for it’s possible performance as a ruffled cardigan!

A blue wool tweed jacket for it’s possible performance as a bow clutch!

A vintage Vera tablecloth for it’s possible performance as a dress!

The envelope please………… drumroll………

Upcycled Wool Bow Clutch

And the Oscar goes to the blue wool tweed jacket!” (Applause, applause, applause!!!)

As the jacket is thanking the Academy and it’s former owner for donating it to the thrift store, it is almost blinded as the flashbulbs explode around this very deserving award recipient.

Upcycled Wool Bow Clutch

But as the night wears on and the glitz and glam wears off, as any true star knows, the real work must begin once again.

Upcycled Wool Bow Clutch

The supporting actors slowly arrive to help create another award winning performance.

Upcycled Wool Bow Clutch

Many times the refashion script is written by me, but for this performance we used an award winning “script”  for a Bow Clutch by Whitney from Elm Street Life.

Thanks, Whitney!

A Renegade Tote Bag Tutorial – Happy Birthday, Carol!

Last summer I posted a popular DIY Summer Totebag with a link to the tutorial I used. WHAT IS THAT YOU SAY!!!???!

That tutorial is no longer available!!??!

Dang!

Well, have no fear, The Renegade Seamstress is here. 🙂

I just made one for you.

A Totebag Tutorial

First, you’ll need to choose three fabrics. One for the lining, another for the main body of the bag and a contrasting fabric for the bottom and the straps. This fun IKEA fabric was begging to be made into a bag.

And perfect for a birthday present for my awesome friend, Carol, who celebrated her birthday yesterday.

Happy birthday, Sistah!!!!

A Totebag Tutorial

You will need:

  1. 1 yard fabric for exterior of tote
  2. 1 yard fabric for interior of tote
  3. 1/3 yard for contrast bottom (more if you are going to make your own straps)
  4. 1 yard heavy fusible interfacing
  5. 2 1/2 yards of 1 1/4″ heavy cotton webbing (you won’t need this if you make your own straps)

Cut list:

Exterior Fabric:

  1. Body- Cut one piece 15″ wide x 25 1/2″ long
  2. Sides- Cut two pieces 4 1/2″ wide x 11 1/2″ long
  3. Pocket- Cut one piece 8 1/2″ wide x 7″ long
  4. Bias tape- Cut a piece 2″ wide x 37″ long  (Check out this tutorial: The Beauty of Bias Tape: Make Your Own)

Contrast Fabric:

  1. Body- Cut one piece 15″ wide x 10 1/2″ long
  2. Sides- Cut two pieces 4 1/2″ wide x 4″ long
  3. Straps- If you decide to make you own instead of using webbing, you’ll need four pieces 2 1/2″ wide x 38″ long

Lining Fabric:

  1. Body- Cut one piece 18 1/2″ wide x 25″ long

Interfacing:

  1. Body- Cut one piece 14 1/2″ wide x 25″ long
  2. Sides- Cut two pieces 4″ wide x 11″ long
  3. Pocket- Cut one piece 8 1/2″ wide by 5 1/2″ long
  4. If you are making your own straps cut two pieces 1 1/4″ wide x 38″ long

Here’s how:

Here’s where you can make your own coordinating straps or use webbing. If you’re making your own, first iron the interfacing on one strap piece. Then, right sides together, sew the two long sides. Turn strap right side out and topstitch the edges. Do this for both straps. Now on to the rest of the bag.A Totebag Tutorial

Dress For Change Week April 1-7, 2013

photo (17)

Meet Sheyanne Root.

When I read what she was doing, I immediately signed up.

She is a senior at Burns High School in Oregon. For her senior project she has started a Dress For Change Week.

This is an except from her blog on what the project is all about:

“I am assuming now you are wondering, what exactly can I do to get involved? Well, on April 1-7 2013, I will be holding the first annual Dress for Change Week. I need women like you to pledge $5 and vow to wear the same black dress for one week. For every woman that participates I will sew a dress for a little girl in Africa. All dresses will be sent to Dresses for Africa, a charity organization that has provided over 1.5 MILLION dresses to African girls already. As you wear your dress for one week, you will not only be forced to accessorize, but you will be helping change the future of a little girl’s life. Because these girls have a dress to not only protect their bodies, they also have clothing for school, and will no doubt find joy with their first dress. Because of your sacrifice of $5 and wearing your black dress for one week you will allow a little girl to be one step closer to receiving an education because she will now have clothing to wear to school. Also, these girls will be able to feel that amazing feeling we’ve all had of wearing a beautiful dress that gives them higher confidence. I know that whenever I purchase a new dress I feel like I can conquer the world. You can make that difference for these little girls!”

WOW! What a great idea!

What do you say, if you’d like to help Sheyanne with her senior project head over to her blog:

“Feelin’ the Love” in my Valentine’s Day Refashion

Upcycled Thrift Store Sweater for Valentine's Day

Valentine’s Day is my favorite classroom party day.

The elation on a six year old’s face when they open a small card from a friend is priceless. My students constantly remind me of how to find joy in the simple things this life has for us.

Of course, I had to wear something festive so, in the holiday spirit, I chose this pink thrift store sweater to refashion.

Upcycled Thrift Store Sweater for Valentine's Day

Since I waited until this morning to make my outfit decision, I had to be quick. Pullover sweaters don’t do a thing for my shape and I wanted to show off the heart shaped belt from the DI so the only thing I did was cut up the center of the sweater and turn it into a cardigan.

Upcycled Thrift Store Sweater for Valentine's Day

I was “feelin’ the love” all day in my new sweater.

Hope you had a beautiful Valentine’s Day with the people you love!
