Now that you’ve set up your sewing machine, practiced your stitches, chosen your fabric and pattern, you’re ready to to mark all of those pattern marks to your fabric. But which marks do you transfer and what should you use?
There are many tool options for marking your fabric, and everyone seems to have their favorite. Test them out on a small scrap of fabric first to see which one you prefer and to make sure that the mark can be removed later. Let’s take a look at some of the options and which pattern marks you will need to transfer.

Do you have any suggestions for converting ladies slacks with a half elastic waist to a zipper and regular waistband?
I believe there are a lot of us older gals who like the slacks, such as Alfred Dunner, but who feel the elastic back waistband is not flattering. I have seven pairs in pretty colors! But just don’t wear them. Before donating, I thought I would ask you if you had any ideas.

I started quilting in my 50s. I know how to sew a straight line. What I don’t know is how to sew garments. The last time I sewed a garment was high school, so… it’s a bit embarrassing to listen to the other quilters who have entered quilting from having sewn clothing for themselves and their children. Through your blog, I’ve discovered a passion for refashion. Problem is, I’m working from instinct and logic. Thank goodness you’ve published these ‘Learn to Sew’ basic tutorials. I’m following along as you publish them. Grandkids should start popping along soon, so I’ll be equipped to sew items for them too! Looking forward to more. Thanks Beth.
I use chalk, but my favorite go-to marker is made by Pilot. The FriXion ball pen. I bought it at a quilt shop and just love it. You mark your fabric and it will come out with water, or it has an eraser tip on the pen and you just remove the mark by friction. It comes in various colors. I guess I like it because you can mark with a fine line. Chalk sometimes marks wide or smeary. Thanks for the tutorials!

Even though I know the basics, I still like to review them in case there is something new I’ve not seen, or if someone is using a technique I’ve not tried. Right now I am struggling thru the rolled hem for scarfs. Sure, I can do the center just fine, it’s the ends that look sloppy, so I keep experimenting.

I could literally cry with happiness at this point! I finally got a sewing machine for Christmas from my husband (and bawled my eyes out Christmas morning when I opened the box! He even got it on camera, so now he teases me about it. 60 Stiches!!!) Anyway, I am trying to learn how to refashion clothes and make my own now! All of your tips have been incredible!
