I seem to have an endless supply of thrift store t shirts hanging around just begging for a refashion.
So today I tried a new technique.
Bleach pen drawing.
And it worked!!!
If your t shirt is too large, first take it in like this:
Now you’re ready for the fun part:
Let the bleach sit on the shirt until it has bleached as much as you’d like then rinse it with cold water.
Wash and dry as usual in the washing machine.
For less than fifty cents, I’ve got a new summer shirt!

So cute!!! I must try this someday! 🙂
Thanks so much!!! It’s so quick and easy especially if you have a t shirt that fits already.
Thanks for your comments!! I really appreciate them!

Love it love it, it’s genius!!!!!! Thank you to share what a fantastic idea!!
Oh, I hope you try it some day!!! Super fun, quick and easy!
I would have never thought of this because usually I’m scared to get bleach on clothes that should not be bleached. Now I want to try this with butterflies. Thanks for the great idea :).
OH the possibilities are endless!!!!! Please share your finished projects! I’d love to see them!
Beth
I’ve never even heard of bleach pens before… this is a great idea with so many applications. You’ve sent my mind to work… thanks for sharing.
Yes, just pick one up in the laundry aisle. You can draw anything with them! Have fun!
Beth
Beth,
Is there a trick to keeping the bleach from running outside the desired design when you rinse out the excess? It seems like that could be a problem on darker fabrics. Thanks.
I actually left the bleach on for awhile hoping to avoid that problem, the longer you leave it on though, the weaker your fabric will become. I just rinsed it off with cold water and didn’t have that problem. My next bleach project is going to be on a dark blue shirt, so I’ll let you know how it goes.
OK, thanks. I am going to pick up a bleach stick today and experiment myself on various types of fabric swatches. I will let you know, too, if I discover any tricks.
Oh, good, because most everything I blog about is trial and error and I always welcome any advice I can get! Don’t you just love this blogging thing!
Beth
I do! except, I find that it’s kind of addicting. It is such a marvel to be able to connect with people you would certainly never otherwise have the opportunity to meet.
I love it! And, I can do it – maybe not as well as you, but I still can! I’ve got a bleach pen in there and I’m going to do this in the next few days! I’ll post my results but wow……….your imagination is incredible!
Thanks Kelli, I can’t wait to see what you come up with!!
Beth
It will probably end up looking like one of my dogs did it with their whiskers or tail, but I don’t care, I’ll wear it proudly! Well ……probably….we’ll see.
You are so funny! I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised with yourself on this one!!!
Beth
We love this idea, especially the cute flower design you created! Was it free-handed?
That is such a cute shirt! I may have to try this!
Oh, I hope you do. It’s super fun and the possibilities are endless! I’d love to see what you do!

What a great idea! Chic Envelopement’s bleach pen idea had me sitting here thinking of all the items I could use this on. Here are a few…personalized pillow cases, towels, placemats, Jeans, tote bags, beach towels (each child can have their own personalized towel), napkins, etc.. I could just go on an on. Thank you Chic Envelopements for making my imagination fly!
You are so welcome!!!! The possibilities are endless aren’t they! Have fun and I can’t wait to see your projects!
Beth
I will share when I finish. 🙂
Lovely effect. Where do you get the bleach pen?
Thanks Jane. You can pick one up in the laundry aisle of your grocery store. The one I used is made by Clorox.
Have fun!
Beth
Very Innovative.
Thank you!
You are amazing. Very cool and very creative! Thank you for sharing.
Oh, Kelly, Thank YOU! I’m glad you enjoyed it!
Beth
Gorgeous and inspiring! I’ve a few things that have mystery spots on them already. They don’t require altering, but I think I’ll try a little redesigning with a bleach pen before I give up on them! Great post- thanks!
Oh yes, the bleach pen would get rid of any stains. Great idea!
It turned out great! I have been wanting to try this for a long time now just haven’t gotten around to it yet. Will have to do ASAP! Too cute!
Jeanna
Dear Jeanna,
I can’t wait to see what you do with this!! You are so creative! This is very quick and easy especially if you don’t have to resize a shirt. Have fun!
Beth
Aww, thanks Beth… You are the sweetest! Love all your ideas too.
Jeanna
You have the best ideas! I’m not confident in my ability to re-size a goodwill shirt to fit me BUT Walmart has colorful v-neck t’s for only $5. I’m willing to risk $5 to see if I can replicate this. 🙂
Oh yes, any shirt will work and using a shirt that fits already cuts down on the time factor tremendously! Have fun and I can’t wait to see what you do!
Beth
I love the bleach pen design idea! Thanks for the inspiration! I realized this could be done with a tablecloth or place mats etc…. Very cool!
Yes, the possibilities are endless!!!! I’m so looking forward to see what you do with this!

Beth
Man, how nice! I wanted to try this for a long time but don’t find the bleach pen around here… Want to try it for tile grout too…
I just found the Clorox Bleach pen in the laundry section of the grocery store. I bet it would work for grout too! 🙂
Beth
Loooove it! I’ve wanted to bleach pen writing, now I definitely have to! 🙂 Thanks!
It was something I wanted to try for awhile, too. I was pleasantly surprised at how fun and easy it was. (Especially, if you don’t have to resize a shirt first. 🙂 ) I hope you try it and I’d love to see pictures!
Beth
I will make a post when I try it on, because I definitely am!
Oh good, I can’t wait to see!!!!
Beautiful design…so summery!

Oh Rhonda, thanks so much for your kind words. It’s ridiculous how much I love doing this so I don’t have plans to stop any time soon. Enjoy your Monday!
Beth
I love how this turned out! I have a t-shirt sitting in my closet right now with a few bleach spots on it from not-so-careful-cleaning. I’ve been trying to figure out what to do to cover the spots, and haven’t found quite the right fix yet. I was playing around with the idea of using ruffles, but my shirt has a really thick collar that would probably look funky with ruffles. You just gave me an easy solution, thanks!
That would be a good fix! I hope you post pictures!!! I’d love to see how it turns out!

Oooh that’s so cool. But why is your bleach so creamy? Is it a special kind?
It’s a Clorox Bleach Pen. You can buy them in the laundry aisle in the grocery store.
Fab! I’ll try and find one today
