Remember when I confessed that I hated mending?
It’s true!
In the past, when I glanced at my mending basket, I’d hear those high-pitched horror movie violins and run the other way.
I know it’s weird, for as much I enjoy sewing and refashioning, that I would fear mending so much.
But today, those violins are starting to play a different tune.
Today, I started to LOVE mending.
Today, I’m mending with a Sashiko inspired stitch and I liked it!

Happy Mending!!!

Oh my goodness! About a year ago an artist friend showed me how she had mended her jeans like this. I even went to the thrift store and bought a pair of jeans to mend. I hate hand work soooo much that I never did it.
I know why I hate it , because I never perfected it enough to like my work. Even as a young seamstress I avoided it like the plague and then when I had my alteration business I wouldn’t take work if there was a lot of hand work.
JUST last week I told myself I needed to get over it and practice, but couldn’t remember what this style was called and my artist friend had moved ( though I had planned in tracking her down).
And lo and behold! You have again come to my rescue! I can’t wait to try it!!
Oh that makes me so happy, Deborah! It really is fun. There is a calming rhythm that takes over when mending this way. Let me know how it goes. I’d love to see your take on Sashiko. 🙂
Love it.
Thank you Cathy!!
Always a class act…even in mending!! Love it!
Oh Susan, that’s such a compliment coming from the master in class herself!!! Thank you!
That is adorable. Or if the jeans were mended for your son, that is “cool.”
Haha! Yes, it’s all in the lingo when it comes to teenage boys, isn’t it!!!?? Thank you, Jill for your nice comment!!!
Beth– your post is exactly what I needed in my life right now. I purchased some sashiko supplies last year to mend a friend’s sweater that I have had FOREVER, but I keep chickening out. Sashiko mending seemed so complicated with so many pattern options. Your very detailed tutorial proves to me I need to tackle this project tonight! Thank-you. I love your blog, and this post has truly inspired me.
Hi Kelly! I’m so glad this was a timely project for you. Let me know How it goes, I’d love to see your project!!!
I only discovered Sashiko in August 2016 and since then I have been so enthralled with working it. I have so far completed 2 different jackets and am currently working on a small bag… it’s not going to stop! So glad others are also finding this joy. It fits in so well with the reuse/repair bandwagon, yes? If you want to check out what I have done find me on FB Creative Oneders (yes, like the movie ‘that thing you do’)
Hi Julie! I can’t wait to see your Sashiko projects. I’m heading over to your page right now…
