DIY: Skirt to Dress

Why just wear things for their intended purpose when you can have two for the price of one? With very little sewing and a little imagination you can transform an already beautiful piece of clothing into something completely different and still leave the original piece of clothing to wear as intended.

My friend Linda, found this skirt with beautiful fabric and lovely gold embroidery at the bottom. She’ll probably style it with boots, a sweater and a scarf for one of her amazing fall or winter outfits. But, there’s really no need for her to store it away for the summer when she can get twice as much wear from this same skirt by quickly converting it into a dress for the warm weather.

It’s hard to decide which look I prefer….the skirt or the dress 🙂 Both look great, and I love the cardigan. Thanks for the tutorial.

Thanks for sharing this. Your friend has a nice garment there. I feel this skirt into dress is a generally useful casual technique, but to me I feel that the gathered top looks too informal with the gold embroidery of what looks to be perhaps a one time sari. What about making the front of the skirt a plain waistband, with the back still gathered? Then it would look more finished when worn as a dress and a skirt.

In the summeras a dress, you could make removable straps with very nice button or other attachments or front and rear. I think you’d be making a more versatile and classier adult garment that way.

Great make-over. I like the dress more than the skirt.

WOW! That’s great! I prefer the dress. My mom happens to have the same skirt in bordeaux and I was about to steel it from her because she doesnt wear it, now I have one more reason!!!

I refashioned a skirt just like this, just blue. Some years ago the thrift shops were full of wrap skirts from the 90s. They make lovely “fabric” for refashions.
My refashion of a similar wrap skirt: http://saga-i-farver.blogspot.dk/2010/11/glimmerjul-til-mig.html
(I later remade the straps to be narrower and made the fit more tailored).

    Another success!

Very creative to get double use of the same item! I really like that orange sweater. Know if it is handmade or if there is a pattern available?

  11. Looks so much cuter as a dress! Great job!
