As I sit here and watch the Academy Awards, I can’t help but think how choosing a refashion project is very similar to The Oscars.
(I know, just stay with me on this one 🙂 )
“And today, the nominees for best refashion possibilities are:
An XL blue cashmere sweater for it’s possible performance as a ruffled cardigan!
A blue wool tweed jacket for it’s possible performance as a bow clutch!
A vintage Vera tablecloth for it’s possible performance as a dress!
The envelope please………… drumroll………
And the Oscar goes to the blue wool tweed jacket!” (Applause, applause, applause!!!)
As the jacket is thanking the Academy and it’s former owner for donating it to the thrift store, it is almost blinded as the flashbulbs explode around this very deserving award recipient.
But as the night wears on and the glitz and glam wears off, as any true star knows, the real work must begin once again.
The supporting actors slowly arrive to help create another award winning performance.
Many times the refashion script is written by me, but for this performance we used an award winning “script” for a Bow Clutch by Whitney from Elm Street Life.

That is adorable! Recently, I scored a 100% wool, vintage-looking coat. I bought it mainly because it was 49-cents and I loved the vintage wood buttons on it. I want to do an awesome refashion with it, but I’m not sure what to refashion it into yet. I’m a little intimidated by it to be honest. It’s very thick. It’s also an ugly green color. I’m not sure if it would dye very well either. I’ll have to look into that. I know that I could always felt it some more. (It’s a really tight-weaved fabric as is) I could just cut it into squares and make a big satchel out of it, but it’s so big and long, that there are probably a lot of refashions I could do with all that material. Other than the awesome clutch you shared, do you have any suggestions? I thought about posting the “before” pic of it and asking for “votes” on what others think would be a cool refashion for it! Anyway, sorry for my long-winded comment. 😉 And thanks again for sharing your adorable refash’! 🙂

I love the idea of a suggestion post. It would be so interesting to get other ideas on what to do with things.
I once bought a big ugly dirty green wool coat at the thrift store bag sale. My daughter looked at me as if I had lost my mind. I have to admit, it was pretty bad, but it did have great big black buttons on it. After washing, I really liked the fabric and made a little girl’s coat and hat from it. Love it! For a project like this, would you have the jacket dry cleaned first? I have a jacket and several wool skirts that I picked up to refashion and they smell old. Would you dry-clean them or do you clean them another way or at all? Thanks!
Hi Maegan, You could have it dry cleaned but if you’d like it to be felted a bit, you could wash and dry it in your own washing machine. That will definitely shrink it and make the fibers tight.
