I had NO idea you could do this.
I seriously thought it was some specially formulated product. Available only in a plastic bag purchased from the grocery store.
It’s amazing what I’ll do to avoid a trip to the market.
Today was the annual Christmas parade and tree lighting celebration in my little town. The Booster Club was serving goodies and hot chocolate and I volunteered to bring some homemade cookies. After making lemon bars and raisin spice bars I realized the powdered sugar bin was empty.
But not to worry, put some granulated sugar into the blender,
pulse a few times, and just like magic, you’ve got powdered sugar.

That’s how we used to make powdered sugar when I lived in Russia! But I used the coffee grinder instead š

I guess my “growing up in the suburbs” is showing again. š But, I’m not alone in thinking it has to be purchased. When at the parade tonight, I mentioned how I made the powdered sugar to a few of the other mothers and they didn’t believe me. Who knew???
Have a good night!

Your post got me thinking whether they sell powdered sugar in Russia now! I have to buy it all made now, because I don’t have a blender š
Have a great night as well!
I have heard powdered sugar also contains a little cornstarch. But yes, this is one of my favorite little baking secrets, too!
I’ll have to try the cornstarch next time. Thanks for the tip!

Thank you so much, JSolomon for your advice. I suffer a complex food intolerance and I read all food labels as a neurotic, checking if I can eat all the ingredients. But I never thought powdered sugar could have anything else than … powdered sugar. Now I run to my counter and read my half-empty powdered sugar can label: “sugar and cornstarch”. OMG, cornstarch!! I can’t taste it. That was the reason why I am feeling sick again.
Thank you!!
Glad it helped š
First you teach me how to refashion a zucchini, now this. What’s next?

I love discoveries like this! When I started doing baking for people w/ multiple food issues, I figured out I could make my own corn-free powdered sugar this way. I use my coffee grinder for this, too – I have one just for spices & powdered sugar. I love to make my own lavender powdered sugar for shortbread – So delicous! If I’m using it right away, I don’t use cornstarch (or tapioca starch in my case), but it sure does help if you’ll be storing it for any amount of time.
Wow, I had no idea there were so many uses for this. I’m not too adventurous in the cooking and baking department so this type of discovery always amazes me. I’m definitely more comfortable behind the wheel of sewing machine. Thanks for sharing your ideas!

Beth – I’ve learned so much from this post! No more panicking for me – as a matter of fact I might just start making my own as needed š Thanks!
Hi Sarah,
I love learning new tricks, especially those that save a little moolah! š
Have a good week,
Beth
How cool is that??? š
I seriously had NO idea it was so easy to make this.
No idea you could do this!! Thank you thank you!
You are so welcome! I get so excited when I discover something new.
BTW I love your work, it’s beautiful!!
Beth
Wow thanks I had no idea!
Niether did I! Always fun to discover something new!
I’m with the majority here, no idea. What a great tip for holiday baking. Not that I do but I sure do enjoy those that slave away in the kitchen!
I don’t mind the baking so much, it’s having to run to the store when I run out of something that bothers me. But I won’t be making the run for powdered sugar anymore. He he he! It sort of feels as though I’m getting away with something. š
Have a great week!
Beth
I learned something new today – thanks! Have a Great One:)
You are so welcome. Happy to share. Enjoy your week!
Beth
Well I’ll be darned! I had no idea either. Thanks!
Wow, I’m surprised a kitchen godess such as yourself didn’t know this little trick. Hope it comes in handy for you sometime.
A kitchen goddess?!?! Ha! You have seen the title of the blog, right? š I have to tell you: Went to a yard sale of a Methodist minister and his wife who was downsizing with help from kids and grandkids. Bought 2 very large boxes – 1 of those cut out fabric panel characters you used to be able to buy, and another large box of quilt pieces already cut and sewn together in the sunflower pattern. for $3 each box! Now, if I just knew how to sew ANYTHING I could sew and stuff the fabric panels and make myself a beautiful quilt! If you are on FB – click on my FB icon on the blog and go to my wall and look at my 12/1/12 yard sale pictures and you will see them!!
Wow, that was quite a find at the sale! I can’t wait to see what you make!!
I learned this trick about ten years ago, when I started working in a Food and Nutrition class at the high school I work at. I was amazed at this and other little secrets I have learned as an adult, since I did not take home ec! Your lemon bars look so yummy!
Thanks, Deann! I’d love to learn some of those other little secrets if you’d like to share. š
You can also make your own brown sugar! 1 tablespoon molasses to 1 cup white sugar in a bowl qnd mix well with your fingers or a fork. Need dark brown sugar? Add another tablespoon of molasses and mix
Oh my gosh!!! Another revelation for me! I had no idea you could do that, too! Thanks for the tip!!! I know I’ll be using that one!
Beth
We have to do this because one of my sons is allergic to, among other things, the corn starch they put in regular powdered sugar to prevent caking. We haven’t bought powdered sugar in years! Glad you posted about it. š I’ll have to show you how to use it to make homemade (corn free) marshmallows next!
I would LOVE to know how to make homemade marshmallows!!!
We call it caster/castor sugar, and I have always made my own! I couldn’t see the sense in paying more for a little bag of the stuff in the shops when I could buy normal sugar and blitz the heck out of it in the blender! You can add a scraped vanilla pod for vanilla sugar, or after it’s been blitzed, some lavender for the yummiest lavender sugar.
Oh, yum! I’ll have to try the vanilla and the lavender, too! Thanks for the ideas!
Beth
woo hoo – love learning these little tricks of the trade. Now I’ll never have to buy powdered sugar again. And when blankenmom shares the marshmallow recipe, I’m there!! š
I can’t wait for the marshmallow recipe!!!
Awesome tip! Thanks =) I wonder if I can use this when I make fudge or if the fudge recipes rely on the added cornstarch from the store bought bags?
